Problems with story titles being changed.

Hi, I'm having some issues with the way my stories are being titled.

I've recently uploaded two versions of a story called Outpost 2, I like to make some edits so I have a hetero and a gay/bi version of my stories where possible for maximum appeal.

The two stories have been named differently, one is called 'Outpost 2: Snowed In - Bisexual', and the other is called 'Outpost: Hetero Version Ch. 02: Snowed In'.

I'm worried that this will be confusing to my readers, I did not give any instructions for the hetero version to be named this way. I've had this problem with some of my other stories being renamed as 'chapters' too. All of my stories are self-contained and there are no 'chapters', they are sequels.

I also have a problem where a whole series of mine appears in my list of published works twice, and I can't find any options to fix that.

Is there some way that I can address this myself that I'm not aware of, or can I get some help to correct these problems?

The double listing is an old bug that happens when you change the title of a story that's within a series after the initial publication.

Odds are it's not going to be fixed for the current version of the submissions page, because the new pages are in beta testing right now, and it won't be that long before they roll out anyway.

Laurel goes through stories quickly when she's approving them, and adding "Ch." to any number is the default. If you want only the number to be there, put a note in the "notes" section or "note to moderators" in the new control panel, if I'm remembering the wording correctly.

That note saying you want only the number should be sufficient to keep her from defaulting to the standard chapter designation.

To change the one that's already published with the unwanted chapter designation, put in an edit and make sure that note is in there, saying that the only thing you want to change is the title, and that you don't want the chapter designation.

If you need any info about the editing process, feel free to ask. I'll try to remember to check back in here tomorrow. You could also search my post history and likely find where I've posted the detailed process in the past.

Thanks for your reply, do you know if the story will be made unavailable to readers during resubmission? If so I may wait a while rather than risk disappointing any readers who wouldn't be able to access it.
It seems strange to me that someone would change the title of a story that is being submitted without being prompted to do so, especially considering that stories upwards of 30,000 words could not be mistaken for chapters.
I guess I will start including instructions not to change any of the titles in my future uploads, though I feel like that should not be necessary.

No, the story will remain live as it is until the changes are processed.

On that note, once the "Edited" submission vanishes from your private list, it takes somewhere around 24 hours for the changes to actually appear on the public side of the site. Sometimes as much as 48 hours.

So don't panic if the title change doesn't happen immediately after the edit is processed. Once the edit is processed, the changes have been made in the database. It just takes a while for the site cache to pick them up and display them.

As things are currently constructed, the only way to present several segments of a story in a chronological order in your submission list is by using chapter ( or part, or episode, etc. ) and a number. Readers understand the progression of chapters better than any other way of presenting it, so that's what Laurel defaults to.

That's supposed to change eventually as the new version of the site rolls out. In time, we're supposed to get more control over how our submission page is constructed, such as being able to manually group stories into a series, eliminating the need for any numerical designation.

Dug up one of my old posts on the editing process, just in case you ( or anybody who finds this by searching in the future ) needs the information.

The plan is to make this process a streamlined pushbutton operation in the future as well, BTW.
