Pro-biotics

I make root-beer with yeast for carbonation. Plenty of flora for me. And I don't have a vagina, so I don't get infections.

As gringos driving across Mexico and Central America for more than a few years we found the best ways to avoid gastric distress are:

* Don't drink impure water, or drinks containing impure ice.
* Don't eat raw anything unless it's purely washed.
* Eat generic pepto-bismal tablets before meals.
* Eat street food -- it's seared pretty safe.
* Eat yogurt at least once a day.

That last maintains the internal flora. We were advised about this by a gringo cousin, a medic who married a Guatemalan dietitian, who travels regularly between Cali and Guaté, and who reports getting the runs whenever he changes diet. Yogurt is your friend.

Alleged probiotics -- I'm not so sure. Sounds like a marketing scam like 'organic' (which officially can contain some inorganic shit).

gut flora my ass. it's fucking bacteria. learn your kingdoms, you bastards.

Last time I was in the interior of Mexico, I was so careful to avoid the water but got sandbagged by some impure ice. Two days of las turistas ensued. :(

Thanks, both interesting. In general, we eat too much crap - fast food, poor nutrition, instant meals instead of from scratch. Sourkraut, kimchee, kombucha etc all help counteract bad habits.

I drink kombucha most days, eat yoghurt every day, and try to avoid the crap. I've been rationalizing a junk food binge lately, though.
