Pricing artwork?

Meeting with an untimely demise would, no doubt, raise the value of your art. Not a suggestion though, just an observation.

I am surprised this thread garnered no responses, so a friendly bump. Maybe asking in the visual arts section?

As far as value, you shouldn't set a floor for your pricing. If someone wants to negotiate downward, fine, but why would any piece of art that anyone seriously wanted to display be worth less than some print they might pay $100 for?

I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner. Pricing is so difficult. I understand the apprehension towards putting a higher price tag on a piece. If someone can't afford your prices, it's not that the price is too high, it's just too high for them.

You can easily open up your market through the internet if it seems your area isn't very receptive. Are there any nearby events specifically for art or handmade items? I would suggest going to some and getting a feel for how people conduct their business and maybe check out their pricing.

As for pricing: materials plus your hourly wage. Price what you think you're worth and go with it. Don't be timid about it, either. People that really want the work will pay for it. Art is a hard sell for most. Always get compensation.

As for the work you did before (very nice, btw. I checked the thread late one night and didn't feel I could post well enough at the time) I would put a price on it that would make me happy enough to let it go. Or you could try to estimate cost of materials and time and go from there. :)

If you're curious about setting up something through an online market, there are some great tutorials on how to package artwork to ship it safely. I've sent pieces out of the country and they've made it in a timely manner with no damage. You might feel a pit in your stomach until you get the confirmation that it arrived safely, though.

There's so much more to think about, but that's some basic stuff to start with. I can't remember all that was in your post so I did my best, I hope that's ok.
