How long do you have to wait after missing a period for a PT to show a positive result?

It's ok, I haven't missed a period :D NaNo research.

most modern tests will be accurate within a day of your period being due. Hope that helps :)

Depends on the test. All tests measure the amount of hCG in the body. Home urine tests are inexpensive and pretty accurate nowadays.

First Response tests will tell you a result three days before your missed period. (Four days before any other test)
FactPlus and EPT and the like want you to wait to test on the day your period is considered late.

But generally, you can find out now within days of missing a period.

Hmmm, is this researched or experience talking..... ;)

Thanks rachlou and Selena,
A little re-wording is in order.

Please hi-jack this thread to relate your worse pregnancy test nightmares, and not all smutty stories of weeing into a test-tube, please.

They're pretty darn quick and accurate now. Most women, unless very regular or unless the condom broke, might wait 5 days to a week before taking such a test, and most PT's would be able to gauge by then if they were preggers or not.

I keep a stone in my shoe, it makes me limp.

What the hell is wrong with this board. No body has suggested an actual field test yet?

Now. Who's volunteering?? :)

I thought you weren't into that sort of thing, Jenny.

But since it's you volunteering, I'll bite. ;)

How do you know when it's three days before a missed period?

Yeh... I had to read that about three times too. Probably a guy thing, we're so tuned to the 'missed period' being the first sign of pregnancy, we forget pregnancy could have started a 'month' before ;) So you can test for it before the next period is due.

Before your next period is due...most women know when they should get their period. I guess this only works if you are trying to get pregnant - otherwise you wouldn't bother doing a test until after you had missed a period.

Technically, you are only 2 weeks pregnant - from ovulation until menstruation is generally 14 days, but they calculate the due date from the first day of the last period.

That sounds like that old joke to me: The stranger in town was riding on a bus and he asked his seatmate about a certain stop. The seatmate answered: "Just watch where I get off and get off the stop before that."

Pregnancy nightmare/ blessing:

In the midst of denial, I waited until I'd missed 2 periods before taking a home test. Watching that line turn purple (NOT pink) was horrifying. Reading the pamphlet that came with the test, I found out that the darker the color the 'more pregnant you are'. Since the line was a dark purple color, I could only assume I was very very pregnant. We told my father, who had his first heart attack the next morning. :( (Yes, he's still alive and well.) We were as yet unmarried and were not trying to get pregnant.

An average menstrual cycle is 28 days. Most women keep track of their cycles in some way (especially if they're trying to conceive, but even if they're not) so they know, generally, when their next period is "due." Some women cycle shorter (24-27 days) some cycle longer (29-35 days... sometimes even longer) and some women have "irregular" cycles... some months it's 28 days, the next, it's 40, the next 31... for those women, it's the most difficult to know when to test.

Due dates are calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. So while we say women are "40 weeks" pregnant, in actual time, the fetus has existed only for 38.

Here's a due date calculator if you need one.

missed periods

When I went off the pill it took 3 months for me to have a period. I remember being really confused when I realized that it had been so long. I went to PP for a checkup and they did a pregnancy test.. I was nervous but I guess it was just that my body had become dependent on the birth control hormone. I am still not regular now a year later but I havn't had any sex lately so I just don't even pay attention. When I was younger, I was sooo paranoid. More recently I barely even think of it.. (beyond using protection).
