From my blog yesterday:

Triphasic.

Sounds like a cold medicine or something, right? Or an age when dinosaurs walked the earth. First came the Jurassic period, and then came the Triphasic…

I’ve been taking my temperature every morning for months for fertility reasons. I just want to know for sure when I ovulate. We don’t want to get pregnant until May, but I figured I’d get a jump on things, establish a pattern. I bought a program called Ovusoft that keeps track of all the numbers. Two days ago, it said, “Possibly triphasic.”

I did a double-take. Huh? What was that?

Today, it said for sure: “Triphasic.”

Apparently, according to the literature:

FERTILITY PREDICTION: Ovusoft has detected a triphasic temperature pattern which can be indicative of being pregnant. It has been over 10 days since you ovulated, which is long enough for implantation of the fertilized egg to occur. You are in the post-ovulatory infertile phase of your cycle. Ovusoft estimates that ovulation occurred on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. This was estimated using temperature and cervical fluid dry-up signs.

Now, the thing is… we had penis-in-vagina sex ONCE last month. ONCE. We’d been abstaining because we both hate condoms, and we figured, better safe than sorry… then one morning we just said the hell with it. Both of us couldn’t stand it anymore, we wanted to be thatclose, and it was at least a week before I was due to ovulate. It was during the “safe” and “infertile” period - even according to the Ovusoft chart.

I told Mr. Kitt this morning.

“I’m triphasic.”

“God bless you!”

“I might be pregnant.”

“But–”

“I know… your spermy-guys should have been long dead by the time I ovulated. It’s bizarre.”

“Have you ever been triphasic before?”

“Not that I know of… but I only started this temperature-taking a few months ago…”

“Hm…” He grinned proudly. “Maybe I have Super-Sperm.”

Now... here's the thing... I got really sick with strep, high fever (101ish), etc. right after the day we had sex. I excluded those numbers (thinking they'd throw the whole thing off). However, if I now INCLUDE them, the program says I ovulated the day AFTER we had sex, not a week later! And instead of saying "triphasic" is says - Prediction: "Pregnant"

Can getting sick make you ovulate sooner??

Technically, my period was due yesterday.

Maybe I should get a test?

Well, do let us know if congradulations are in order. ;) Looks like you're in for a Christmas present, to me.

Funny thing is... we didn't want to get pregnant until May - one, for insurance reasons. Two, we wanted an Aquarian ;)

But we're planning on naming this baby after a very good friend of ours (Luke) who died a few years ago...

His birthday was December 18 (that would be my due date) and he died the day after his birthday.

Think it's a message??

I remember reading that sperm can live for 72 hours. So, if you were a couple days early...

It's amazing and exciting, isn't it? You try to plan, but fate has a way of taking over. Maybe this little person is just meant to be. :)

:D I'll save the congratulations until you know for sure.

But here's hpoing. :)

Ooooh. Triphasic.

Hoping, though. :) Be sure to keep us updated. :rose:

So, I'm guessing you were off any kind of contraceptive in order to prepare for the May pregnancy?

Here's hopin' then!

If the test comes up positive, do make sure you let the doctor know about that strep throat. That's a pretty severe illness and you want to make sure every thing's fine with baby.

Get a test. An HPT to start with. But...I don't remember if you can take it this soon...?

Good luck!

Gosh... that all sounds very complicated... I thought a Mummy and Daddy had a special cuddle - et voila - baby!

All this yet to come.

Yep, I had my IUD out back in January... because our insurance ended Jan 31. DH got a new job.

Ironically, our new insurance doesn't kick in until Apr 7.

Good thing I plan home births.

you did not say when intercourse occurred.

the estimated ovulation date is Mar 25. unfortunately that's a soft number.

we'd have to know your history of ovulation. is that an accurate estimate?

if so, you'd think that say, more than 5 days before or after, you could not become pregnant.

there are OTC tests that work for the first day of missed period. surely that's very soon and you can tell then.

NOTE: apparently the 'triphasic chart' is a very rough indicator. see this website.

After ovulation your temperatures should stay above the coverline for at least twelve days. If your temperatures fall below your coverline this may be an indication of a short luteal phase or a luteal phase defect.

Another thing many charting women look for is signs of pregnancy. If your temperature remains high for eighteen days after ovulation, this could be an indication of pregnancy. You may also see a third rise in temperature occuring about seven to ten days after ovulaton. This is called a triphasic chart. Sometimes this can be a seen with pregnancy but it is not a definite sign. Women can have triphasic charts and not be pregnant.

I'm EXTREMELY regular. 26 day cycle, 5 day menses. March 25 would have been a very accurate estimate.

But did getting sick throw things off, is the question?

We had sex March 18. I got sick March 19. I excluded numbers from the ovulation program from the 19th-22nd (when I was feverish.) The subsequent temps said I ovulated March 25th, but that I was showing a "triphasic" temp pattern after ovulation, indicating a possible pregnancy.

But if I put the temps I excluded back in (including the feverish ones) the program says I ovulated March 19th. And predicts pregnancy based on my temps.

Maybe it's just my being sick throwing everything off?

I hate to waste money on a test! If I buy it tonight, of course my period will start before the morning!

Knowing nothing about the American Insurance system... if the insurance starts on the 7th does that not cover you? Or is pregnancy viewed as a pre-existing condition? Could you not pretend ignorance of the pregnancy for another 2 days?? You're not exactly far on...

Pre-existing condition.

But yeah, I could fudge the numbers... and I will, if I am, just a CYA measure...

OK - you can test at home, get the results, not tell your doctor, request a PT in the office (or just report that your period is late and they'll offer you one) and be clear of the pre-existing problem. Had a bunch of women do this over the years. You're fine there. :)

If you normally have 26 day cycles, it means that you (probably) typically ovulate on day 12, not day 14. Most women ovulate 14 days before the next period, not 14 days after your LPM. That could be part of it. ;)

Also, some sperm have been known to survive 7 - 8 days. Your DH could be right, SUPER SPERM!!

Additionally, human women can ovulate in response to emotional stimulus. If you and DH had been abstaining, but had an emotional and physical longing for each other, it could have triggered an ovulation, even if you were quite due yet.

And, also, your friend wants you to have a baby so he can have a namesake. Additionally, the world really does not need another aquarius.

If you're not pregnant now, I would definitely start tracking your cervix, manually. Feel it every day and get used to what it feels like when your software and temp indicate that your ovulating and not ovulating. FWIW, I never took my temp. I reliably used the feel of my cervix / cervical mucous for fertility awareness / pregnancy prevention for years.

If you want to talk on the phone about this, let me know. I'll PM my number.

Best of luck, pretty kitty!

Depending on where you live and how your doctor bills, pregnancy may not be a pre-existing condition.

I was 35 weeks pregnant when my insurance kicked in, but because my doc billed post-delivery, the entire pregnancy (all tests, doc visits, delivery, etc) was covered. It works this way in most states.

Yeah, there are a lot of regulations that have been passed in response to this "pre-existing condition" BS. It all depends on where you live.
