So I did a tiny bit of research - I looked through the top four pages to see if any of the old threads I remembered were still active and they weren't though I did see one or two threads related to this subject. As we all know, plenty of American's are overweight or making bad health choices and further there seem to be plenty of overweight bdsmers. While it's best to love our selves and our bodies - sometimes we aren't always making healthy choices for ourselves. And while new years resolution threads are very popular year after year - it's usually damage control after a holiday season where we allow ourselves to overindulge. Wouldn't it be better to make a committment to make changes here in the month of September - giving us six weeks to be prepared before Halloween and all it's temptation. To already be on a good roll that we aren't willing to negate by one tempting bag of candy? And to keep that momentum going straight through Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years so that when people ask you what resolution you're going to make - you can just say, "I'm resolving to keep up the good work"

It's preventative self-help!

So this is my idea. This thread for those of us who have attainable goals that we can actually achieve in the next six weeks. Here you state your goal, give us permission to encourage you and check up on your progress in this thread and through private messages - or you can invite one or two people to be a buddy. I plan on sharing my instant messenger name with one person who is willing to commit to everyday or nearly everyday encouragement and accountability for me.

In this thread you can share things that are helping you, small habits you're forming that work. Foods you're eating that taste great and are good for you. Recipes and recipe links. Ways of exercising that work up a sweat AND are enjoyable and that you can commit to. The best menu choices at fast food places.

At this thread you can celebrate small victories (grabbing an apple instead of a cookie or walking up a flight of stairs instead of using an elevator). At this thread you can admit the mistakes you made, get past them and move on and set new goals and ask for help achieving them through the encourage of your friends here.

So here are some simple rules for this thread:

  • Have a goal.
  • Be a friend and supportive to the other posters.
  • Have your goal be attainable in a set amount of time. [ie, don't say you're going to drop three sizes in two months - that isn't healthy]
  • Share good news. Share success stories.. be inspired and inspire others.
  • BE serious. - I'll have more to say about this in a moment.
  • IGNORE anyone with something negative to say

Okay, now hopefully everyone else is going to enjoy this thread and find it useful

Further Rules

So I want to make a request for this thread...

Now I know many of the regulars on this forum are very sexy beings with an animal magnetism that is hard to resist but I beg you to please not muck up this thread with your flirting - take it straight to pm or another thread. Please respect the intent of this thread. If you don't, I'm going to ridicule you and berate you and throw fat free cottage cheese at you.

Also, ignore trolls - just don't even respond. Even if you want to - just ignore it.... or start a new thread where you can berate them.

But seriously - no little personal chats on non-related subjects - there are PLENTY of threads that have been made specifically for that purpose - please move such comments to those threads.

I'm serious about what I want to happen in this thread and I would appreciate everyone respecting that.

That being said my goals:

  • Eat all six apples in the fridge by Friday
  • Lose 12 pounds by New Years Eve

I will give what support I can. My own body composition work has been demolished lately by life getting in the way.

But to give my story, I was 316# in April of last year. Blood pressure was super high and my doc put a major scare into me, and put me on meds. I hate meds, so I decided to get off of em. Decided to lose weight, clean up my diet (bye bye carbs and junk food) exercise, etc. It was dead simple (note, simple, not easy), and I lost 80# by the end of the year. In december I hit 231#

Well, my chosen form of exercise was bicycling. I noticed that it was getting harder to take hills. This was counterintuitive, as there was less of me to push aroudn on that bike, so it should've been easier. I also noticedd that I was getting cold easily, had no energy, etc. Did a bunch of research and found out that extended caloric restriction diets like I was on cause muscle loss, and eventually result in a crash of your metabolic rate. Ro I'd lost muscle and strength and my metabolism was garbage. No wonder it was tough to bike, and no wonder I'd stalled on weight loss.

So I needed to eat more, period. gotta eat to get the metabolism running. And I needed to regain muscle, period. So I upped my intake a good bit, started eating more often to maintain blood sugar and metabolic level, and started lifting again. 5 months or so later I'd gained 25#. I maintained the same body fat percentage the whole time, so 20-22# of that was muscle. Tat's great numbers.

I did a modified Atkins early on, and didn't eat enough. These days it's called Kimkins. *shrug* It's simple. You drop your carbs way back, and don't go totally crazy on bad fats like Atkins. These days I follow the guidelins in Precision Nutrition, by Dr John Berardi. Awesome program, way worth the money.

I have no problem answering questions, discussing what I did, or anything else.

One MAJOR suggestion I will make is to do a food journal. If you do not know what you're taking in, you cannot track your diet. I suggest www.fitday.com as it is free, and very handy.
