Power Bills to Skyrocket as Promised

Obama did promise before his election that if he was able to take power, electricity costs would “necessarily skyrocket” — with effects on the economy that ought to be obvious even to a liberal. He hoped to accomplish this through Cap & Trade legislation, but his objective was so radical and obviously harmful to the country that he could not get it through the Democrat-controlled Senate. No matter: what can’t be legislated is simply imposed by fiat through regulation. That’s what the EPA is for. Tighten your belts; Obama is keeping his promise:

Already weary of high gas prices and 9.1 percent unemployment, many Americans are about to get another kick in the wallet thanks to large increases in their electricity bills.

From Alaska to Georgia and Wyoming to Florida, utilities are seeking permission to pass on hundreds of millions of dollars in new charges to customers to help upgrade aging infrastructure and build new or retrofitted power plants that comply with tougher environmental regulations, a Daily Beast review of regulatory filings has found. …

The Beast’s review of regulatory filings found at least 16 utilities covering 6.1 million customers are seeking rate hikes of 5 percent or more. Almost half of those want increases of 10 percent or more.

True enough the power grid could use updating, but why does it need to cost so much? Here’s why:

[M]ore than half the states have imposed new clean-energy standards that require utilities to feed in renewable sources. Older systems can’t handle variable power sources such as wind and solar, and therefore require significant upgrades. …

Utilities also are facing more stringent environmental regulations. The Environmental Protection Agency is considering a variety of new rules that would affect electricity generation, essentially forcing utility companies to shutter their coal plants or invest hundreds of millions in scrubbers that remove toxins from the air.

It could be worse — and it soon will be. The EPA is currently working on regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant, a surreal concept that has already been approved by the Supreme Court. This means that literally all human and even animal activity falls under EPA jurisdiction.

Government-imposed moonbattery isn’t cheap. Someone has to pay for it. That someone isn’t the power company; it’s you

Closing Power Plants Due To EPA Regulations

EPA regs will shut down 28 GW of energy production

Last month we told you about energy plants in both Kentucky and Indiana which are facing the prospect of shutting down far ahead of schedule because of pending EPA regulations. These closures come at a tremendous cost which, as always, will be passed on to the consumer. We also noted that these were not isolated examples, and more of the same should be expected. Now a new report from the Institute for Energy Research has identified an alarming number of additional plants which face a similar fate. The total cost to the power grid is a staggering 28 gigawatts of production.

Currently, EPA is leading the Obama administration’s assault on coal with a number of new regulations. Two of the most important are the “transport rule” and the “toxics rule” (Utility MACT). Combined, these regulations will systematically reduce access to affordable and reliable energy.

Each closure represents less available energy which translates into higher utility bills for consumers, not to mention the possibility of new rolling blackouts during periods of high demand. This is above and beyond the costs incurred by producers to replace these plants where possible – costs which will also be passed on to you. Lest you think this is a problem mostly being faced by Texas, think again. Is your home state on this list?

Ohio: 2,894 MW retired, 8.6% of state total generating capacity.
West Virginia: 2,448 MW retired, 14% of state total generating capacity.
Indiana: 2,168 MW retired, 7.5% of state total generating capacity.
Tennessee: 1,376 MW retired, 6.2% of state total generating capacity.
Missouri: 1,325 MW retired, 6.3% of state total generating capacity.
Wisconsin: 902 MW retired, 5% of state total generating capacity.
