POV - Writing from a different perspective:

I wear a hat!! Went looking for a new one the other day, actually.

Wait, did we get off-topic somehow? ;)

a Brit who talked about visiting with someone, would ring false - unless this was, say, a country and western freak who deliberately used US idiom

Hey!! I resemble that remark!!

*grins*

Actually, my speech is a hybrid of English and American idioms. I don't visit with someone. Some things are not different than others and I write to people, I don't just write them. That said, I do pop the trunk on the car, I call people on the phone (instead of ringing them up) and I definitely don't smoke fags anymore...........

Good heavens! How much does the hat cost, then?!

At that event, all the hats are individual designer models, guaranteed unique.

A little wisp of a hat - from 350 pounds sterling fot the cheapest. The upper limit? There isn't one. Nouveau riche Russians are the best buyers. If one can buy a Premier Division Football Club for a hobby (translate that to buying a major Baseball team) he can afford the price of a luxury car for his wife's hat.

Exactly the point I was trying to make, raphy. You are you, and you talk like you, not like any stereotype. The same ought (I think) to be true of fictional characters too. Just that any oddities should be deliberate plot/character development.

Absolutely :)

I like giving my characters little oddities, both in speech and/or behaviour. The main character in my NaNo novel is Canadian and always smokes Du Maurier cigarettes.
