Potential Editor? Application Still Pending!

I've come to the conclusion that someone, somewhere, way up in the high cogs that make this place turn has fallen asleep. Two weeks ago I decided to become a Volunteer Editor seeing as so many people were having trouble finding an editor. I even promised to reply to all who contacted me, even if it was only to say, 'Sorry, I'm fully committed right now', after all it’s only polite given that they have taken the trouble of selecting and then approaching an editor.

Two weeks later and my application is still pending, despite PM’ing Killermuffin and enlisting his help. So either the decision makers have fallen asleep, or they are just too polite to tell me to take a walk. Maybe I am just impatient, but I was told my application would only take 24 hours. Perhaps I should just withdraw my application and go and watch a good movie instead – what are your thoughts – anyone else with a similar experience?

Muffin hasn't been around in quite some time, so you picked the wrong moderator to pm. I'm not sure if others have had problems having their editor app approved, but I know most of us think the entire volunteer editor system should be revamped. I'd say the majority of the names on the list don't bother answering requests.

Hi Crim,

Muffin actually replied to my PM just under two weeks ago and said he would forward my PM to the relevant person so I guess he's just tied up and only dropping in when he's got time.

From what I hear, I understand the whole system needs looking at so I am in full agreement with you there - have you also applied?

:)

Ahh, well it's nice to know Muffie does still come around.

No, I haven't applied to be an editor. I've run into problems on the flip side, trying to find one.

Obviously they manage to get names onto the list eventually. I volunteered a couple of months ago and just last week got a request to a story, so maybe it just takes longer than it should.

I may be a bit out on my timing, but it's only about a year or so since VE was rebuilt after the old one fell apart at the seams. That was because there were a lot of people on it who never replied to requests!

On another board, the (powered by the same engine as this one) there is a monthly request to confirm membership of the VE scheme.

That would seem like a good option Snooper, at least the Editors list would be kept up to date and constant. If it's taking two months to process applications, as I understand it from The Writer, instead of the 24 hours, there won't be any Editors so the system is flawed either way.

I'm with you sandmartin.

I volunteered to help them, yet left hanging.

Somedays I'm ready to just turn editing 'off' so I'm no longer pending.

So much for doing 'them' and 'their' readers a favor.

My thoughts exactly Doormouse. If they say 24 hours, then it should be around about that. Little wonder writer's get a poor service from the editors if it's taking two months to process applications. I'll bet a good number of prospective editors have moved on with their lives and are doing something completely different by the time their applications have been processed and are therefore no longer interested in editing - just a thought.

Last I looked...

...KillerMuffin warn't no dude! More like a regal queen.

Wonder if we'll still be celebrating in a months time when we're snowed under with editing requests? :eek!:

:big grin:

As to revamping the VE system, I fully agree. When I was first on Lit, and the VE had just started (so I guess it was the first system), I e-mailed a dozen editors, and got no responses at all.

I am now a VE, and I make a point of responding to every author who has gone to the effort of using the search. There are few things I dislike more than editors who don't answer pleas for help ;), and authors who don't condescend to answer feedback (even with a "Thanks").

Point is... um... Point is, I think Lit has really expanded over the past few years, and the Powers That Be are having a mite of trouble keeping everything running seamlessly. (Not that I don't get impatient when my stories are pending, but I understand that just because my story "pends" for a week, it doesn't mean they don't love me. ;) )

Yadda yadda yadda...
