How can I post pictures and gifs in the text box rather than an attachment?

Do you see formatting controls above the text box when you're posting? If not, go to User CP and in 'Edit Options' near the bottom you'll see a place to select the type of editor. You want the standard editor with extra formatting controls.
Then, when you post a picture, choose the little 'image' icon and it will request the URL of the picture and include it inline rather than as a link. I believe this works with attachments stored in the Lit database as well as externally hosted pictures, you just need the correct URL for the picture in both cases.
Remember that there are rules about what you can post inline, though - more explicit stuff hosted externally is fine as a link, but explicit inline images, especially those stored within Lit itself risk removal, or even removal of the thread as a whole.
