I know there are answers in the FAQ section of this site, but I'm just not getting it, apparently.

I want to post some images as attachments, but I keep getting the message that they are too large - what gives? I know I've seen HUUUUUUUGE images in other threads...why can't I post a few pictures?

Also, there's a way to post the image directly into the topic, and not as a link - how do I do that, please?

Thanks! :)

***A window will tell you if the dimensions or file size of the attachment(s) exceed the limit.

Bring down the size with an image manipulation program like "Irfanview" when you save it in the new size, save it as a .jpg and move the compression slider down to 70% this will then "save as" a reduced size and compressed image and then try uploading again.

Doing this once on a picture straight from a digital camera will bring it down from x by y to say 600 x 400 and to around 70 KB, it will now probably upload without problems.

Load as an attachment to add it as a link, or upload the picture to the web, and then refference it using the picture button, (like a postcard), above. This tags the image with the correct tags for this board.

But without the spaces, picture picked at random from the web.

Images that display within a post have been uploaded to a "hosting site." Most sites will generate the "IMG" tags for you to copy 'n paste into your post.

If you have G-rated pics, you can use Photobucket.com. If they are adult-rated, you'll have to use a different hosting service such as Pixcastle.com, Hidebehind, com or **********.com. All of these are free. There are others. Search for free hosting services... and read the Terms of Service at each to make sure you don't (possibly) get into trouble for breaking the rules.

The detailed instructions on both attaching images and inserting them directly into a post (which requires them to be on another site, such as an image hosting site, but doesn't place restrictions on size [though it's nice to use reasonably sized images, since some have slow connections and browse on mobile devices]) are in the FAQs Before Posting Sticky (link) at the top of the main How To page.

Just click on the question that deals with attaching and inserting images into posts/sigs, and you'll be taken to the answer. :)

Or google 'free adult image hosting' to bypass searching through the fine print (not that it's a bad idea to read that anyway) to see whether or not the site allows more than G-rated subject matter.

Not that anyone here would post illegal photos, but just to be on the safe side, make sure your adult images don't conflict with what the hosting service considers legal. Hidebehind.com seems to have extremely casual guidelines.

I'm not sure I'd classify 800x600 pixels as "HUUUUUUUGE" but that's the largest an attachment can be. Hotlinked images -- those tha show up inthe body of the posts like the image Ezzy linked can be any size because they're not taking up any of Lit's server space.

If your images are under 800x600 (and 600x800 portrait orientation is NOT smaller than 800x600) an you're still getting the too large message, you have it saved in the wrong image format (BMP. TIF, or other uncompressed format) or the JPeG quality setting is too high (not enough compression.)

What I do for attachments is open them with IrfanView (or Paintshop Pro), select Image/Resize from the menu bar, set the larger dimension as 600 (pixels), click OK and File "Save As (JPeG)" (the default compression level in IrfanView is usually enough to meet Lits filesize limits, but there is a slider bar in the "Save AS" Dialog to adjust it if not.)

I add an exclamation point (!) at the beginning of the file name to distinguish the resized version and make show up in the Browse list when I go to upload it -- you should always save altered images with an altered filename to preserve the original.
