I would be very grateful if somebody could illuminate me as the what I should do when uploading a story; previously, when I posted a story, I wrote it in Word, saved it as a plain text file, and uploaded it to the site as a .txt file, which I then edited in the pane to correct paragraph spacing etc., adding in the []...[] html tags where I wanted italics or bold characters.

In the new dashboard, are these []...[] parentheses still used, or, as I'll now be uploading a Word 95-2003 document, should I use the <i>body</i> html tags? I don't include a whole hella lot of italics or bold as a rule, but if I should, what should I do to get it right?

Thanx, Will

I found .txt doesn't load for me on the new dash, but .rtf does. So I just write and save .rtf

I upload from a kindle, this could have something to do with it.

I don't know about italics and bold though, as I never use them.

The old system is still available, until it's not, so you could just stick with what you know. Hopefully somebody else will have better advice!

I save and upload in .rtf format as well, and don't use italics or boldface. My understanding is that to use those styles you save and upload in .txt format with appropriate html tags.

I won't be trying to publish in the new dashboard until the old one is taken from me. And then, if I find it difficult, I'll stop submitting at all (which may have been the site's goal in devising a new dashboard. :D)

I reported the issue with uploading a .txt file in the new control panel, so it's in the fix file.

In the meantime, continue doing as you were, but instead of uploading the .txt file, copy-paste it into the submission box instead.

Thank you everyone, good advice and food for thought all round; at the moment I'm still wedded to the old user dashboard, I've been using it for years and I (sort of...) understand how it works, but I'm concerned they'll yank it away one day with no proper warning, so I thought I'd better familiarise myself with the new one before Preferred Option 1: the old user dashboard disappears altogether. I'm kind of with Pilot on this, though; if the new dashboard proves too impossibly tetchy to work with, I may just stop altogether; I have a limited number of senior moments left, I prefer not to waste them headbutting my screen...

I've uploaded at least two stories as .txt through the new CP, both with embedded html. The first one went through without a problem. Due to a mistake on my part, the second one was interpreted with the wrong character set. I PM'd Laurel and we had the problem fixed in minutes.

Luddites unite!

.rtf is good, plain text, zero problems. Who needs bold and italics anyway? By all accounts, fancy formatting all goes pear-shaped as soon as it hits your browser regardless, so why bother?

Words is words, Lit ain't a colouring-in book! Mind you, a piece of erotica that looks like the Book of Kells would be pretty damn cool!
