This is a bit tangential, maybe, but I do a lot of writing and revising on line, and I'm getting these huge pop-ups, sometime every couple mins., that run from the top to the bottom of the screen, and cover everything I'm reading or writing.

They are white or gray, (say, 10' x 10') and seem different from the little 4 x4 ones that are common, moveable and minimizable.

How do I get rid of them? (Some advertise software to get rid of popups, but I feel I'm in a 'protection racket')

If you use IE, click here:

You'll notice I left the link where you can read it.

Yo've got spyware installed on your computer. Here's a few links to free spyware cleaners:

http://spybot.safer-networking.de/ (PC Mag likes this one best)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ (most people like this one)

You can find free popup stoppers here:

You either picked it surfing porn sites or other shady sites, you have kazaa or some other peer to peer sharing system (even lite carries spyware and adware) or you've gotten some download and didn't read the fine print. My money is on the first one.

Thanks, will check.

I'll have you know that the porn sites I frequent are NOT shady, merely perverse and degenerate.

I got spyware installed, but I still get spam for various amateur web cam sites and bootymail.

Tony,

You misunderstand. You don't want spyware installed. It reports back to advertizers on where you go and enables them to fill your computer with pop-ups.

Go to lavasoft like KM says, and download their free "Ad-aware" program. It'll find all the spyware on your PC and get rid of it. Works great.

I didn't express myself properly. It was supposed to be anti-spyware software that got installed. However, it seems to be immune to these particular popups that keep popping up.

As a computer security professional I can assure you that this is an ongoing battle. Every time some new, good anti-popup or anti-virus appears the bad guys get round it. Then we hot up the anti- and it goes on round and round.

Hi,

Progress report

The antispyware suggested by KM does help, but the large pop ups (screen fillers) keep coming.

I've no installed 'noAds'; it lets you deal with popups one at a time. I let people know about how good it works.

I gather other programs try to 'intelligently' catch pop-ups without human intervention, and clearly those are going to be subject to the probs mentioned by un-registered (same probs as
'intelligent' spam filters-- the spammer knows you're looking for a certain word, 'viagra', so he writes it v*i*a*g*r*a).
