Well, ok, I need help with my dissertation.

Can anyone name some controversial British artists from the 1960s/70s/80s who worked within the constructs of feminism/queer art or some other non-straight white male group? I can only think of Americans and this dissertation is concerned with British art...

Francis Bacon would be a good starting point. Google with give you plenty of info.

Look into the Camberwell School of Art - history 1970's, major influence on 'queer art' emerging in UK.

If you want female artists, start with Yoko Ono. Although she is not a British artist, she had a major influence in emerging shock art in UK - reference Alexandra Palace and the infamous 'art performance' involving the cutting away of the clothing of a girl on a pedestal - circa 1973?

You might also want to look at David Hockney.

ETA: I've some links somewhere for a story on the 'back burner', I'll try to dig them out.

Gah - how could I forget Yoko Ono - thanks :)
This dissertation is giving me a massive headache. I've written just over half of it in terms of word count, but something tells me it's going to need a heavy pruning to keep it relevant. <sigh>
I'm totally losing interest since I did my massive project last term - think I used up all my will-power, determination and inspiration on that.

You're welcome :)
Unfortunately, none of my links are available - they were all on IE, which I no longer use and I neglected to transfer them to Mozilla

You might reference Punk Culture as it emerged in the 70's, the relationship between punk bands and art schools was extremely close. David Bowie also came out of an art school background, and dabbles with painting still.

I'd be happy to give your diss. a read if you think it might help.

PM me your e-mail and I would be *soooooooooo* grateful to have someone else have a look. I am floundering and I only get one 'lookover' by my supervisor before we hand in...
What can I do for you in return to show my gratitude?

I would have said Hockney too. His swimming pool paintings are wonderful. How about Lucien Freud?

There is a comedy film called "The Rebel", starring Tony Hancock, that satirised the 1960s gay artist movement, although it was based on a straight artist called John Bratby.

Oh. I know *all* about John Bratby.

Do you?

My brother knew John Bratby and his partner. I'm jealous because my brother has several Bratby pictures.

Most of the pictures need to be seen from at least twenty feet away to get the proper effect. At least one is always displayed so that it is seen from the other end of a room.

Modern? No, timeless.

Art? Art is beauty, so your ass qualifies.

Damn! I'm on a roll today.

The project I worked on last term involved making a catalogue - one of the most prominent pieces involved was an enormous Bratby painting, about 10 feet high.
T'was interesting, but intensive...

Returned comments on dissertation. Let me know if you didn't receive them.

I got ...

Disability portrayed in art can be seen as ‘subversive art’ – introducing a unfamiliar dimension to the common perception of ‘art’ as a mechanism/device for attracting attention; e.g. Damian Hirst – Shark / Cow series, Tracy Emin – Bed / Tent

Is that what you meant?

Gilbert and George.

(Though they're not too crazy about critics referring to their work as "homoerotic", because the same critics never refer to straight artists as "heteroerotic")
