Poor South Korea has been greatly fucked over not once but twice by President Mushbrain.

In 2019, Mushbrain informed South Korea that it was replacing its old missile defense system with three brand new technologies:
  • The THAAD missiles that have been so effective in the Middle East,
  • the world class radar system that tracks anything and everything up to the upper atmosphere (good for ICBM detection, gives a greatly enlarged window for response)
  • the latest generation Patriot missile system (version 3, the model that can adjust missiles in flight to intercept).

South Korea was hesitant to accept this upgrade, fearing (correctly) that China might see this as a "provocation" and/or an "escalation".

South Korea was correct. China informed South Korea that they viewed this as an escalation, and in retaliation placed a one year ban on export/import to South Korean. The South Korea economy took a serious hit.

Fast forward to 2025. Trump's first 12 week war with Iraq resulted in expenditure of roughly 30-33% of all THAAD missiles in the Middle East. When Israel invaded Iran, a huge number (classified, but estimated to be about half of remaining THAAD inventory) were expended by the United States to protect Israel from old, slow Iranian ordnance that was 20+ years old.

Then the first hypersonic missile fired by Iran scored a direct hit on the US billion dollar upper atmosphere radar dome, effectively wiping out the top 33% of the layered missile shield in the middle east. In the mean time, Israel expended every single one of the version 3 patriot missiles and had to draw upon their older inventory of verison 2 patriot missiles, which were ineffective against Iranian missiles.

The Israeli government was begging for resupply of V3 patriots and American commanders were adamant they needed more THAAD missiles, so Mushbrain ordered the immediate dismantling of all South Korean upgraded missile defense system and had them shipped to the Middle East ASAP.

Now South Korea currently has NO missile defense shield against China, and more importantly, North Korea.

South Korean president was extremely fatalistic "We did not want this to happen but we understand the global needs are elsewhere".

Trump has given a "Trump promise" to replace the South Korean missile defenses once this war in the Middle East is over, which should be any day now.

North Korea has a gift now, a temporary huge advantage militarily over South Korea (with the US military distracted elsewhere), and if they invade South Korea it too will be a very short war.

But hai, Bibi is getting the V3 Patriot replacements he demanded!

Can you add a bibliography? I find these updates very interesting but I also like to go to the source.

That's the way the cookie crumbles.

I'll have to find the original source but here is an update from today.
Once South Korea showed footage of American soldiers removing the missile systems, North Korea demonstrated it's brand new missile system, solely to scare South Korea.

Normally when North Korea tests a new missile, it's done under a shroud of secrecy and any video footage is low quality. Not today, today North Korea took high quality footage of the test and leaked it all over the internet.

Here's what a simple search reveals:

1. Some U.S. missile defense systems are being moved
Reports indicate that parts of the THAAD and Patriot air defense assets that were deployed in South Korea have been relocated or are under consideration for relocation to bases in the Middle East to reinforce defenses there due to increased Iranian missile and drone activity.

2. South Korean leadership says deterrence remains intact
South Korea’s president has publicly stated that even with some U.S. systems temporarily moved, the country’s deterrence against North Korea is not “disabled” and that Seoul believes its own defense capabilities—along with remaining U.S. assets—can still maintain security on the peninsula.

3. Experts don’t see a total collapse of defenses
Analysts point out that moving some equipment doesn’t mean South Korea’s entire air/missile defense architecture has been wiped out. South Korea has its own Patriot systems, indigenous interceptors, layered defenses, and plans for future systems that help fill gaps even if some U.S. assets are temporarily elsewhere.

Bottom line

  • No: South Korea’s missile defense systems haven’t been completely depleted due to U.S. operations.
  • Yes: some U.S. missile defense assets are being reallocated temporarily because of the Iran war.
  • No evidence suggests that this equates to the total removal or collapse of South Korea’s defensive capabilities—just a shift in where some equipment is deployed.

Actually, that doesn't matter so much. What matters is the conventional long-range artillery NK has dug into mountain tunnels facing south, which could pound Seoul to rubble in a day.

But the defense that works here is that Kim Jong-un is not QUITE crazy or stupid enough to believe he or his regime could survive a war, no matter how it goes or what else happens or who gets involved or whether it goes nuclear or not. Even if it's strictly NK v. SK and strictly conventional, the SKs outnumber them 2 to 1 and they're better fed.

Of course SK can't rely on much protection from Japan here, their armed forces can't even handle Godzilla.
