PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona sheriff known for crackdowns on people living in the country illegally is giving up his last major foothold in immigration enforcement efforts that won him popularity among voters but gradually were reined in by Washington and the courts.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office revealed late Wednesday that it was agreeing to disband a controversial squad that has raided businesses to arrest more than 700 immigrants who were charged with using fake or stolen IDs to get jobs.

"He has proved that when he gets involved in immigration enforcement, he tramples on the U.S. Constitution, at great expense to taxpayers and public safety," said Cecillia Wang, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who won a racial profiling case against Arpaio's office.

While Sheriff Joe may be a crooked media whore, he is one of the few government officials taking any action against illegal immigration.

He got his leash yanked for depriving people of their constitutional rights.

:D

He has probably done that in the past but enforcing laws is what police and sheriffs are supposed to do, whether those laws are federal, state or local.

A man does the right thing for his country
The law goes against him and protects people that shouldn't be here to start with

Welcome to fucking earth

There are no greater affronts in this entire hemisphere, to America, our founding principles, than you and the appeasing weasels you represent in the Democrat Party.

Lunatic says what?

That's not Arpaio. He's an embarrassment to his country. And so is everybody who voted for him and everybody who likes him.

That would include a majority of the voters in Maricopa Co., the biggest in AZ. What people like about him is that he enforces the laws, including state and federal ones, as sheriffs and police are supposed to do.

What Constitutional rights has he trampled. As far as I can see, he's just doing his job and enforcing laws.

Having read the various articles on him ,it is surprising anyone would leap to his defence .In fact there seems a strong case for criminal charges .

I have no great affection for the sheriff but I do have respect for the laws and believe they should be enforced. What articles do you mean? In the Daily Kos or Media Matters and similar sources? .

Just Google Joe Arpaio and take your pick .
The law should apply equally to everyone and clearly does not in his county ,

Yes... it's not exactly hard to find

if you're behind him for upholding the law.. you should probably know he's not to fond of doing it himself

There is one passing reference to toilets in one of those links. Here is a whole bunch of links who make no mention of them. https://www.google.com/search?sourc...8&rlz=1T4NDKB_enUS560US560&q=graves+vs+arpaio

I'm not defending the man; I consider him a world class asshole. However, I am defending the truth.
