It seems like an absolutely minimal social expectation that people who make a mess clean it up themselves.

And if they won't, it seems like an absolutely minimal social expectation that they pay a fee when they dig in and refuse and make you clean up after them.

Cigarette butts.
Styrofoam cups.
Cellophane wrap.
Coffee cups.
Bubble packs.
Batteries.
Straws.
Driving your car.
Buying meat at the grocery store.
Living in your house.
Even working at your job.

Every one of us every day live in a system with waste built in at every level. How many plastic garbage bags does your office use? Do you buy meat? Do you get coffee? We think throwing it away or recycling it is the end of our responsibility.

How do you address a system that is top to bottom completely reliant on ignoring the waste it creates as a matter of course?

In our world, we use. We do not care for.

Whether it's the idiot oil companies - see ongoing leak in gulf - or every day living as a "consumer".

Right now we're pretty fucked.

Oh yeah, and the health problems caused by all this waste. Didn't even touch that.

I set the can out, trash goes away. Repeat.
It's like magic except I have to work and move the cans myself. I hate that. There needs to be a way for the trash to go from my house to the can to the road without me leaving my chair.
And I got 2 recycle cans cuz I'm special and awesome. And also because the town switched companies a while back and they forgot to give me my recycle one so I called and next thing I know I got two of them. I didn't complain. One for recycling, one a nice big trash can for my workshop that didn't cost me a dime. Yay me.

I mean, yeah, pick up after yourself and watch your fuel efficiency, but let's not pretend like everyday people are the fucking problem here.

100 companies make 71% of our pollution. I could suck down factory farm coffee while smoking a cigarette and driving a goddamn SUV, throw the styrofoam cup and the butt out the window, and I wouldn't be responsible for 1% of what these 100 companies do.

Shifting the blame to people who use straws and away from the real problem is a PR move that we need to call out.

Like yeah, don't be an asshole who flicks your butts into the street, but don't pretend like this is an equal shake because it's absolutely not.

Good article. Corporate responsibility is huge.

My post wasn't meant to shift blame to the consumer. Just the opposite. The consumer is quite literally trapped into this system. Regardless of best efforts.

Looks like I've been living rent free in B4E's head. :D

There is that buushit denial.....it is every day people.

Except those 100 companies are supported and pollute the way they do because you and 2 billion other assholes buy the coffee, ciggs, SUV and styrofoam from them and then throw your shit out on the roads every day and it adds up.

You don't have to buy all that stuff and be a lazy piece of shit who tosses it out the window.

Yeah, we super are. GF wanted to do a 'no waste' lifestyle and... that was annoying. She eventually gave up because me and Bitesize just kinda... plain wouldn't do it? Like I wasn't mean about it but god it's an awful way to live for literally no reward since we're not the problem in the first place.
