poll: should we drop the cuban trade boycot

several of tonighs newcasts have cited polls (i don't know if they were very scientific) that indicate a small majority of americans wish us to end the boycott. bush has said he would veto any attempt by congress to do so. because there seems to be dissention and a narrow margin, i thought this would be a good subject here at lit. discuss.

I really dont care on way or the other, but it seems odd to me that we trade with China and not Cuba. What would the benefit be the the US to trade with Cuba?

It does not have to be y/n. I would suspend boycott for 4 months, and have Cuba evaluated after 3 months. If they took irreversible steps toward freedom (free press, democracy, ...) I would lift boycott altogether. Otherwise I would reinstate it.

This sort of Boycott is an attempt by governments of the world to subvert the encumbered governments of nations.

It works on the theory of hurting the commonman so they rise up and oust a government. We have ask is this fair and reasonable.

It is a dufficult situation do you cease trade with a country because they kill 1,000 innocent people over political differances. I so boycotting do you not endange a greater number of people to potential hardship.

I dont know how to stop breaches of human rights i really dont and i wish there was an easy answer but in my opinion boycotts in respect to trade are unfair/ Stick with Cultural and Sporting boycotts but not trade.

Does anybody really believe that after Castro being in office 40+ years that the trade boycott really has any chance of changing the type of government in Cuba? If you do I have some nice swampland I would like to sell you.

With both China and Russia we have proven that the best way to change such recalcitrant communist countries has been to infiltrate them with capitalism.
