No doubt in my mind. "I Love Rock And Roll" - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is the version that everyone knows but its actually a hard-rock update of an obscure glam rock song - the original is by a little-known U.K. band, The Arrows.

I gotta go with Joan Jett.........The attitude in the video says it all.

I love Joan, I reaaallllllyyyyy do, but I voted for E. Must be my southern roots. Anyway I would love to hear Joan do it. How about a song like this land is your land. Very American and written by a proto punk rocker. I just insist that God Bless the USA not be it. It was written by a limey fuck (and I apologize to the good English out there who have nothing to do with Lee Greenwood) and I believe we did open up a can of whoop ass on their red coated asses some time ago. At least the StarSpangled banner is secular and about kicking limey ass. I could be wrong about that but I don't think so.

Young black leather Elvis kicks ass and I want to sleep with Joan Jett!!!

i voted for i love rock n roll....but just b/c britney spears just redid it....

i'm teasing..(or am i :D)

Not alot will think of it as a theme, but "Rock Rock (Ti Ya Drop)" or "Lets Get Rocked" by Def Leppard both make for a great rock anthems.

if u aren't teasing, you just lost major cool points...or did you?

I voted "Jailhouse Rock" as the r&r national anthem ( I love ZZ Top covers of Elvis, by the way).

I always considered KISS's "I wanna rock & roll all night" the anthem of the 70's.

I can only think of the rock and roll version of the Star Spangled Banner.... perhaps, I am out of touch, but was it Hendrix who did that?

It always gives me chills. It personifies the American Spirit in that it takes our ancient, over done, national anthem and adds depth, individuality and speaks to freedom as he wails the tune on his electric guitar.

It is haunting and speaks to me. Perhaps, those are simply the voices in my head?

:D

In terms of the poll, Joan Jett gets my vote.

Oooh!!! Jimi Hendrix doing the star spangled banner. Yes! Let's all kick some limey butt. (Again apologies to all the nice English out there).

ancient and overdone? sorry babe...that and amazing grace could never be described in that way.

American Rock Tunes

Yes, the "Star Spangled Banner" by Hendrix is an old fave, Boston did it very well, and so did KISS on the Alive III album.

"Pink Houses" by John Melon Cougarcamp

"America" by Simon and Garfarkle

"American Band" by Bachman Tuna Ovarydrivel

There's more....

Well, of course you are right.

Hmmm must be that I am tired to use such lousy wording...

the meaning was that it wasn't modern, new music and I am afraid our young people don't understand or respect the roots and meaning of the National Anthem. They hear it at sporting events , on the television at sign off time, etc. OH shit....not making any sense....

Perhaps, more so since 9/11, but all in all....

Geesh....tired ramblings.

I have an MP3 of Big Sugar doing a rock version of the Canadian anthem.. Maybe the best version of our anthem I've heard ever.

More American Rock Tunes

"Surfin' USA" by the Bitch Boys

"Rock in America" by KnightRanger

"Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Bung

These are all good.

With you on both counts, MissTaken. The first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title was Jimi.

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

Springstein!! Born in the USA

classic

It IS classic, PV - but "Born To Run" gets my vote. Though few anthems have the word "suicide" in them....and perhaps "We've gotta get out while we're young" doesn't encourage tourism.....still and all, the "runaway American dream" eludes us all.

Born To Run
Bruce Springsteen

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream.
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines.
Sprung from cages out on highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected
And steppin' out over the line.
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young.
'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run.

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions.
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims,
And strap your hands across my engines.
Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back.
Will you walk with me out on the wire?
'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels.
I want to know if love is wild
Girl I want to know if love is real.
And I want you to show me.

Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard.
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard.
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist.
I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss.

The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive.
Everybody's out on the run tonight
But there's no place left to hide.
Together Wendy we'll live with the sadness,
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul.
Someday girl I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go
And we'll walk in the sun.
But till then tramps like us,
Baby we were born to run.
