for those of you who observe christmas...

i was thinking about this the past few weeks. in conversations with folks, i've noted that often folks have particular events or experiences that really makes it feel like the christmas season.

so how do you finish that sentence?

p.s.: as usual, my answers later, yadda yadda yadda...

...after the American Thanksgiving, definitely. I abhor the way retailers keep moving up the season in an attempt to capture those hyper-early bird purchases, and the crazy commercialization of holidays in general. I mean, who's really feeling the Halloween spirit in August, the Christmas et al. spirit in October, or the Easter/Spring spirit in February? Not me, that's for sure!

I'm pretty firm on not feeling "Christmasy" until after December 1st, or more typically, a week or two into December. Maybe I just never have my shit together enough to start planning and decorating earlier than that (although I have almost nothing to do last minute this year, thankfully)! :D

Anyway, usually a week or two after Thanksgiving, we get our lights and tree (fresh, always; a fake tree would mean a fake Christmas for me, personally) up, and then it starts to feel more like Christmas. It snowballs (pardon the wintry pun) from there: I usually make some sort of treat and/or gift, purchase a limited number of presents, don't mind hearing holiday music several times a week (too much takes the fun out of it for me), take part in lots of charity/giving/kindness acts, and we do some fun holiday activities as a family.

My final preparation is always wrapping presents for close family members on Christmas Eve, and then I really feel like Christmas has arrived.

What sentence?

No Christmas Spirit this year. I went thru the motions, and was generous, but I see little enthusiasm and excitement with anyone. It feels like April 15th.

It's Christmas for me as soon as the trees are up and decorated.

Until I'm tuning up my guitar at choir practice for the children's mass. It's always amazing when those little voices start to sing.

it's not Christmas until...

My wife and I like to drive around the neighborhood or go into Philly or NYC to check out the lights. It really gets us into the holiday spirit. That and listening to the Rat Pack Christmas Music.

It's not Christmas until after January 1st and all the fucking music stops! Thankfully, we only have 6 months until it all starts up again, so Merrry Christmas everyone!

I'm not down on the essence of Xmas, it is all the commercialism and the fact that maybe 1 in 500,000 actually understands what the season is about. Fuck all the gift giving, fuck all the music, and most of all FUCK the commercialism!!!! Christmas is a time for family, friends, loved ones, being together for the sake that you just love being with these people, not that there is some intrinsic greedy need to give everyone some meaningless "gift" of some crap they don't need and won't appreciate.

I want to be with people I appreciate, and those who appreciate me. My gift is their presence or well wishes, and, likewise, mine to them. Who needs baubles when there are boobies . . . er, uh, I mean true, loving spirits to be with?:kiss:

Fuck yeah boobies!

Yeah, it's not Christmas for me until sometime in January when all the buying and selling frenzy has ended. Near as I can tell, Jesus Christ was probably a human rights activist who would be appalled by the gross commercialism surrounding the date that some politico of the past chose to be his birthday. He was probably born in January, so it is fortunate that we have not screwed up his actual birth date.
