I grew up with an Indian being and Indian and the term means just that and nothing more. Now they are "first nations" which is fine but in some cases it may not work out that well in a story.
So I am writing a story about swingers who are friends and multiracial.
Do i need to worry about calling an ex basketball player black? I think you get the idea.
my story has:
black
Asian
Brown (east indian)
white do I say Irish or German or????
These terms help describe the people and give a better picture. The thing is a basketball player could be Asian and that would be the wrong idea
I do know better than to use a derogatory word, unless the story line had that in it but mine does not. But in some cases what was ok is not now.
Perhaps I am making too much of this but better to ask.
Thanks
