Police have arrested one of the three white men who allegedly fired into a crowd near the Black Lives Matter encampment Monday night.

Minneapolis police said they arrested a 23-year-old suspect in Bloomington at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. Police are still searching for the other two suspects.

Authorities are weighing whether to treat the shooting of five people protesting near the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct Monday night as a hate crime, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday morning.

White Supremists make their presence known at protest for death of unarmed victim

Noor, a media contact for Black Lives Matter, said “a group of white supremacists showed up at the protest, as they have done most nights.”

One of the men wore a mask, said Dana Jaehnert, who had been at the protest site since early evening.

When about a dozen protesters attempted to herd the group away from the area, Noor said, they “opened fire on about six protesters,” hitting five of them. Jaehnert said she heard four gunshots.

Minneapolis police officers fatally shot Jamar Clark on Nov. 15, protesters have continuously staged protests outside the department’s Fourth Precinct station and have demanded video footage of the incident.

Clark’s funeral will take place Wednesday, and his family requested that no protests take place that day. But some protesters said the demonstrations will continue at least through Thursday evening, when protesters plan to march from the Fourth Precinct to the city government buildings downtown.

“This is a people’s movement and we have to do what the people want,” protester Jacob Laddea said. “That means we will still be here on Wednesday.”

In addition to the release of the tapes, protester Tammy Finn said a desire for justice led her to the police station.

“They took somebody from our community, and we need justice for that,” she said.

Minnesota governor Mark Dayton
Black Minnesotans are just plain stupid

Twitter message posted Sunday to the account of the 7th Congressional District Republicans has Minnesota Democrats claiming racism.

The 7th District covers a wide swath of western Minnesota, including Moorhead.

The following tweet was sent out:

MNCD7GOP
MN #DFL
Now propose a "special session"
to deal with their self created
#Negroproblem

The tweet linked to an article on the website
ourblacknews dot com

titled “Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton thinks Black Minnesotans are just plain stupid.” It accused the the DFL and Dayton of having a “Negro problem” because Democrats ignored agendas put forth by African-Americans but now want to call a special legislative session over the shooting of a black youth in north Minneapolis.

The article’s writer, identified as Don Allen, goes on to write: “I don’t think the con-job is going to work this time. The political types already have the plan written earlier in the year; the problem is that plan would put black Minnesotans back in the game, they cannot have that, those Negroes might start voting Republican.”

The DFL released a statement from chairman Ken Martin calling the comments “racist and bigoted.”

“The GOP is clearly out of touch on issues of race here in Minnesota and around the country,” Martin’s statement said. “Regrettably these comments have become commonplace in the Republican Party and it should be no surprise that they are now an accepted and normal part of their conversation. While our community is still struggling with the death of a young man and trying to find answers for his family, the Republican Party of Minnesota decided to chime in with racist and bigoted comments.

Minn. GOP group deletes tweet DFL called 'racist and bigoted'

tweet sent out yesterday by the Seventh Congressional District Republicans with a message the DFL called "racist and bigoted" has been taken down and the DFL Party chair has asked the Minnesota GOP to apologize to the people of Minnesota.

"MN #DFL now propose a "special session" to deal with their self-created "#negroproblem" the tweet, which was posted last night, said. It linked to a Facebook message that was also apparently taken down.

Members of the CD7 GOP executive committee, including Chairman Craig Bishop and Deputy Chair Barb Chervastad did not immediately return calls for comment.

GOP Chairman Keith Downey tweeted last night that there was a "Twitter moratorium" in place for the Seventh District Republicans. He also said the volunteer manager was being relieved of all duties.

I find this part to be especially interesting: When about a dozen protesters attempted to herd the group away from the area, Noor said, they “opened fire on about six protesters,” hitting five of them. Jaehnert said she heard four gunshots.

This was a public place; therefore the white men had as much right to be there as anybody else. If the dozen protestors tried to peaceably persuade them to leave, that would be one thing. However, if they tried to physically drag them away, that would be an assault, and the white men would have been justified in defending themselves.

Not with guns, they wouldn't.

But I thought that responsible gun owners only pull out their weapons to defuse a potentially deadly situation, not to create one.

They also use them if they are being assaulted. Whether this was the case or not, I can't be sure, but from reading the description of the incident, it sounds like it was.

It sounds like it to YOU not to a reasonable person. Herding generally isn't particularly violent. Nothing in the article (which is obviously written in support of those who were shot so maybe there are other sources) suggests that the people being herded were even touched let alone assaulted or threatened with assault.

While clearly this is a case where a gun made a bad situation worse there was probably some shouting, probably implied violence. Guy got scared was armed and open fired in "self defense".

Here is something more recent: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...inneapolis-black-lives-matter-protest-n472546

And here is what was said about self-defense:

Demonstrators said several people were forcing the group away from the protest when shots rang out.

Asked whether shooting suspect Allen Scarsella could make a self-defense claim, Feeman said, "We anticipate he may do that. Based on the evidence we see to date, it will not be successful."

This was a public gathering in a public place. Those who were accused of shooting had every right to be there and, if they were being forced away under duress or violently, they acted in self-defense.

I have to laugh grimly about BLM claiming some people were disrupting their protest. BLM is notorious for disrupting anybody, any time they feel like it.
