James Murphy had a good life. He had his wife of twenty years, who was as a good a wife as any man could ask for. He had a beautiful house in a good neighborhood, where he never had any problems. He had a great job with the local electrical coop as a supervisor, which paid well, and he had a good crew, who never gave him any problems.
And he had a beautiful daughter, Dana Murphy (image) who never gave him any trouble.
Oh, she could have been trouble. She was a beauty, after all, with her looks. She stood a trim five foot three, with fair skin, an almost elfin face, lots of thick, dark red hair, sparkling green eyes and a wonderful figure. But Dana was the proverbial good girl, preferring her studies and her art to boys. In fact, Dana had only been out on group dates and, at the age of eighteen, had never gotten further than a few kisses.
Yes, life was good for James Murphy, and this Friday would be particularly good. It was James' turn to host the monthly poker game with three of his fellow supervisors down in his basement. His wife had prepared sandwiches and snacks for the guys, and then promptly left for her sister's. Normally his wife would have taken their daughter, but Dana had a meeting after school for math club, so she wouldn't be getting home until after her mother had left.
But that was no problem. Dana had said she would help set up the snacks for the guys coming over (all fellow supervisors of James' at the coop) and then retreat up to her room.
James was looking forward to his buddies coming over. The stakes they played for were fairly low (for them). But it gave them a chance to socialize, blow off steam, have a few beers and just generally enjoy themselves.
And so seven o'clock found James and Dana (who was dressed in loose jeans and an over-sized sweatshirt with her school's mascot on its front) setting up things in the Murphy basement as they waited for the rest of the poker players to arrive.
