Is it just me or does the poetry submission page NOT include the ability to add an attachment the way the story submission page does?

With some poetry the formatting is crucial (just read Octavio Paz if you don't know what I mean). Its difficult/impossible to do proper formatting in the text submission box. In order to a poem justice it would be nice to be able to attach a "word" document that includes the correct formatting.

If its just me - then let me know and I'll figure out what's wrong on my end. If its the lit poetry submission page then this is a request to add the ability to submit a file attachment.

It's Not Just You...

I noticed that right after the switch over to the new scripts and emailed Laurel about it when they were asking everybody to let them know what if any changes or improvements needed to be made.

I know EXACTLY what you mean about formatting making a big difference sometimes...and it get's even trickier when you have embedded images in the piece...

One of the reasons I haven't submitted anything new since right after the switch over...the piece I have waiting wouldn't make much sense without the graphic in it.

Laurel replied to me, explaining they hadn't caught that the poem submission page was missing the browse and upload feature when they were fleshing out the new look, but that they would get it fixed...but, understandably, with so many things on the stove; getting the new site to just stay up, narrowing down the backlog of submissions from before, all the day to day minutiae and hassles, they just haven't gotten to it yet...but I'm waiting :)

Havoc

yeah, that's a problem for me too.. most things I write should be text centered.

I think if you write in the submission that you need all of that and email laurel with further instructions for it, she'll fix it up how you want it....

Yeah, angel, she's really good about that, but with some poetry that can get tricky and time-consuming. Your instructions could be like:

Center line one
Indent line tow
Right justify line three
Line four is fine...
etc

It would be like Chinese stereo instructions ;-)

I'm sure it will be gotten to. I hadn't noticed it before, either. Thanks for the heads up, Dillinger.

Stories can have typos and errors, but I am a prissy poet.

Thanks everyone for the feedback... hopefully Laurel will see this and add it to her list - or move it higher on the list... *lol*

Thanks in advance, Laurel.

The Upload feature for poetry is on our list, and should be available soon.

As far as special formatting for poetry...HTML is an extremely limited language. There are many things that are easy to do in your word processor that are extremely difficult to do in HTML. Things like centering are easy - if you want your poem centered or right-aligned instead of left-aligned, make a note to that effect at the beginning of your poem. However, HTML does not recognize a series of spaces as separate entities - it turns them into one space. Adding extra spaces requires that I go in and manually paste in a non-breaking space character -   - every time you want extra spaces.

i.e. If you want the line to read
red
[space][space][space]rose
[space][space][space][space][space][space]lips

I have to make it
red
   rose
      lips

As you can imagine, it's time-consuming for me to do this. If you do want non-breaking spaces, please make a note to that effect in your submission, and be aware that it will take longer for your poem to be posted. If you're dead-set on having extra spaces and you want your poem up NOW, you can always go in and place a   every time you want two or more spaces in a row.

Hope this helps...any questions, just ask!

Heya,

I moved this thread to the Author's Hangout because...well, because I can. :p
