Now, a new feature-length documentary film

– Poetry in Wartime --

has been created to tell the story of Poets Against the War as well as to distill the emotional essence of war and conflict through the lens of poetry. The film looks at war through images and the words of poets – both unknown and famous –and our very own Maria to bring the experience of war into sharp focus– from the Poets Against the War movement and from Homer, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman and poets from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For more information about the film, please go to:

Poetry in Wartime -- a Documentary Film
to be released in September, 2004.

A new web site – Voices in Wartime --
voicesinwartime.org

has been launched to promote the film Poetry in Wartime, and also to provide a place for publishing art work in response to war, including poetry, essays, stories, blogs, and images.

Maria has been humble about the inclusion of her poem read in the film--- but this is a big deal! So so cool! Maria, can you post the poem for us here? Or fill us in if you want?

Congratulations! It is not a surprise that they picked your words, they have moved many people already!

Congrats Maria!!! I doesn't surprise me either to see that others have recognized your skill and ability to capture honest emotion and free it on the page. Way to go girl! May it be one of many successes.:rose: :heart:

Thanks for letting everyone know Anna.

dear Anna :)

you are a sweet woman, you know that? I really am kinda shy, ya'll believe it or not ;) but I felt like if I said anything I would jinx it if that makes sense.

I originally posted the poem here, as a Mia Moore poem, its titled

Deeper than the Truth~

They buried that soldier boy last Friday
in a pleasant enough graveyard
by the old Baptist church and just
a few yards from the preschool playground

When the tents are gone and flowers removed
by caretakers, family and friends
he might just have a view
of the old Country Cupboard where he
and his buddies bought glass bottled cokes
and condoms before they were old enough
to fight or vote

When I drive past the church I think of him
and I wondered just yesterday if he could see
a bit to the right, from deep beneath the soil,
the Shell station a half mile down the road

The price of gas is falling.
But the young men are falling faster

~~~~~
I want to make one thing absolutely clear, I do not approve of war, but I totally support the men and women who sacrifice their lives and their time with their families so I have the freedom to write a poem like that one.
I got an email from the man who is producing the film, he asked if they could use my words in a section where the images and poems form a "cavalcade of images." there will be some featured poems from the poets against the war site ( angeline gave me the link, thanks sis;) but I do not believe mine will be read as a feature, but its still kinda cool to finally have a credit :D
thanks minsue and catbabe and anna :rose: :heart:
and they still are accepting new poems and statements on conscience on the site if anyone wants to submit something www.poetsagainstthewar.org
off to bed, finally
maria
:heart: you all are the best buncha people I ever met. I mean it, I was barely even writing at all when I posted my first poem, and eve mentioned it and I have learned so much from all of you and so much support and encouragement here!!
and I cant help but wonder, if I had come here sooner, there might not have been a need for Normal Jean :D
hugs and kisses dear friends :rose:
Maria !! I just saw this !! :heart: :rose: :heart: :rose: :kiss:
I may not say it often, but when I do, I feel the rightness of it down in my bones. Maria, you draw wonderful pictures with your words. I am happy to get a taste of them sometimes.
Congrats! Next you'll be saying, "Well, I shouldn't be Poet Laureate..." Just kidding! :p But, you are a great poet even though you can't see it.
Looking forward to that someday when the book of garden poems graces my home library ...
ahem...
Maria! Maria! Maria!
I told you you could do this! I am sooo proud of you and I have that poem copied and near a picture of mine. I love it! You go, GF!!
:rose: :rose: :rose:
Congrats, Maria!
(Furrows his brow, grabs the piece of paper with the list of "stuff I"d like to accomplish someday"... and begins writing!)
Seriously... I'm so happy for you! Considering how strong a poet you are, it was only a matter of time!
Champagne1982, :heart: thank you so much for your kind words, and if I ever do have a garden poem book, I will sign a copy just for you :)
Boo, jd, ya'll are so sweet, all of you guys and gals who encourage me, I wouldnt be writing if it werent for this place, I truly believe it, so what everyone here can do is encourage other poets who are starting out, our time is the best gift we can give :rose:
Nice poem, Maria. And thanks for the links, Anna.
Congratulations, Maria!
I love that poem now as much as I did when I first saw it posted by Mia Moore, and I couldn't think of a more appropriate homage. I'm really glad for you. :)
