I love to write poetry. I've turned down sex just to write a poem! Is that really loving poetry, or just crazy?

How does poetry fit into your life? Do you carry around paper and pencil just incase you're suddenly inspired?

What does poetry mean to you? Is it how you best express yourself? An outlet? A habit? :)

Do you really think of yourself as a poet? I see myself as someone who writes poems. I'm not yet a poet.

In which areas do you hope to improve? I want to be able to nail meter and rhythm!

Where is poetry taking you? Is it just a pleasurable pastime? Do you have dreams of being published?

Duh...yes, that's crazy! (That poem would have to be really hung well for me to say "no." What did you say, anyway? "Sorry, I have a planet to save?")

Nope, but I do call my machine while driving in crazy traffic to leave an inspiration. A lot of that happens behind the wheel.

No, it's an outlet, but funny that. I've been an artist all of my life and yet poetry is new for me. It was as though something or someone turned on a faucet in my head last year and I can't shut it off.

I've painted paintings. I'm a painter. I've written plays. I'm a playwright. I've written music. I'm a musician. I've written poems. I'm a poet.

WE, meet my cousins from Tennesee, Billy Bob Meter and Darrel Rhythm.

Personally, I'm hoping to improve my storytelling skills. And use poetry to paint the images of the story.

I don't know. I'm having such a fun time looking out the window as the trees flash by, I haven't asked the driver.

It's very pleasurable, and yes, I have dreams of being published, but I know nothing about trying to approach what little publishers of poetry there are.

So, that's one, who else?

That's crazy. The only valid reason to turn down sex for a poem is if that poem is going to get you more and better sex very soon.

I do carry around paper and pencil, inspiration strikes in the weirdest places. But only very rarely have I used it to write poetry. The only sudden inpirations I get are connected with my architecture...

It's definetively not the way I express best. It's an outlet, it's an exercice, it's a struggle, it's a chase. I love a good challenge.

I'm just writing. I wish I could say the same thing as Judo. I do paint. I'm a painter. I do sculpture, I'm a sculptor. I do write, I'm a writer. But I'm still struggling with poetry... not yet...

I want to improve myself. I don't see myself writing poetry in a few years, but I do want to be able to do it. I want to write prose, good one. I feel the same way Judo does in this one. I want to use poetry to paint the images of my stories.

I do dream of being published someday, but with prose, not poetry. It would be nice to get the best of both though... I want to get better at it before even considering it...

There! happy now? (Inquiring minds are my favorite. Stupidity killed the cat, curiosity was framed...)

Ladies, I gave up sex with my husband! That doesn't count! lol

Any volunteers for a tongue in cheek

That's not just crazy, that's wicked! Your poor hubby.

Sideways. Pencil and paper? That reminds me of the ancient joke about the constipated mathematician.

Mostly, it means pretentious 20 yr olds who wear far too much black. Me? I don't express myself as a rule--it frightens everybody. So my usual outlet is an extended bout of naval gazing followed by a frantic lint hunt.

No. I think of myself as a messiah. A sort of unenlightened messiah of the idiots. Sort of like Beavis on the cross. As far as writing goes, I prefer ink-stained wretch, even though the only time I am actually ink-stained is when I change the cartridge in the printer.

I hope to learn to swing dance. Oh and to rhyme Russian with Italian. I want to nail Tyra Banks. I think Eve's chances with meter (Billy Bob) and rhythm (Darryl) are probably better.

Poetry is torture. Masturbating is pleasurable. I've been published in a small way (not poetry). As far as payment goes, see previous ink-stained wretch comment. All I'm missing is tuberculosis and a garret and I would be an artiste!

karma, you are such a bad, bad dog! No more tummy rubs and flea baths for you!

I'm sorry

I can't live without tummy rubs! As far as flea baths, couldn't you just consider some advantage (taking some, I mean). I'll play it straight.

Poetry is not that big a part of my life. It's not that I don't enjoy it, but I'm just using it to improve my prose. EG better figurative language and use of symbols. I want to use these in more conscious ways to give greater depth to my writing.

You've read some of my stuff, you know I need to improve in all aspects of poetry. I don't have much time to devote to poetry because I read heavily and I always have at least one story going. Plus, I keep up a writer's notebook and write essays.

I don't think of myself as a poet at all. I don't really care if my poetry is ever published, but I am hoping to get a short story in The New Yorker or The Atlantic Monthly. Hell, Playboy would be great too. At this point, I'm hoping that my poetry never sees the light of day under my name. Lit is good enough for me.

I really like hanging out on the Poetry board though. You guys are a lot of fun and I learn a lot from you. I've practically quit hanging with the authors. They are a humorless lot. Always arguing or bitching about voting. What do they think? A high score means you're good? Strange. I think they get caught up in competition. If you treat writing as a competition, you're doing something wrong. Go play tennis or something.

I've been writing since I was mdmdjfhjdfjh years old (that's a long time ago). I can't imagine not writing, whether it's a poem or something else. I write for a living and I come home and write. And while i've never turned down sex to write a poem, I've had better experiences writing some poems than I've had having some sex, but that's another story. Oh and i don't always have a pen and paper handy, but I'm usually thinking about what I want to write or rewrite.

What does poetry mean to you? Is it how you best express yourself? An outlet? A habit?

Poetry is an emotional outlet for me, but it's also often a way for me to crystallize my opinion about whatever. If something is troubling me because I can't pin down where I stand on it, writing a poem often clarifies my position.

Do you really think of yourself as a poet?

I used to think I knew what a poet was (it had something to do with a frilly shirt, a rose in the teeth, and lots of sighing). I was naive once. Now I don't know what a poet is, but I do know that I love playing with words and that the construction of words into meaning is a fascinating act of creation to me.

In which areas do you hope to improve?

Someone recently said of my poems: "If you consider a poem as a cake, you bake a great cake. But the best cakes are simple and yours are often decorated unnecessarily." I'm trying to bake good simple cakes. And a more disciplined approach with those rhythm and meter thingies couldn't hurt either.

Where is poetry taking you? Is it just a pleasurable pastime? Do you have dreams of being published?

I have published lots of stuff related to my career, but no poems. Two are currently being considered for publication in a journal. Cross your fingers for me! If I could make enough dough from publishing to write poetry or stories full-time, I'd quit my corporate life in a heartbeat and be reallllllllly happy, but I doubt that will ever happen and in the meantime there's the mortgage and my daughter wants horseback riding lessons, sooooo......

Inquiring mind want to know!

Thanks for listening! I felt blabbly today!
