For anyone who hasn't heard of them, there is a group known as the Westboro Baptist Church [WBC]. They are a group of churchmembers whom have made it a habit to protest the war at military funerals.
They have now gone to the point where they intentionally provoke funeral goers with particular language and burning of the US flag. And now, they videotape the incited incidents, and the lawyers in the group use the videotapes as evidence to sue the people whom argue against them to fund their efforts.
Its getting so bad that in the first three days of December, in this area they will hold protests at 6 funerals.

I can understand protesting the war. I have no qualms with that. However, it would be nice if these groups would just let people bury their family members in grief. This is a disgrace to themselves, as well as not allowing the family members the peace they deserve.

Evil Pigs

I hate those bastards... Thank you for bringing these evil pigs to everyone's attention... Burning the flag and disrupting funerals is deplorable...

those people have a screw loose, seriously!!! they are fucking mental and just grin and giggle like mental patients in the looney bin...

They got sued, as a group and individually and lost. I don't remember the amount but it is enough that htey will work for one Marine's family for the rest of their lives. The so called preacher, and his daughters are the ringleaders. It's under appeal so we shall see but it was a big win for the good guys. Back in the spring I think.

Those people piss me off; they have no tact, no class, no taste at all. Protest whatever you want all you want, but have the grace NOT to do it at a funeral.:(

These are just extremists hiding behind religion as an excuse to do this stuff. Choosing a Baptist cover wasn't all that inspired, though.

Remember that there are people who do fight this kind of hatred. For example:

The Patriot Guard Riders are a motorcyclist group comprised primarily of veterans who attend the funerals of members of the U.S. Armed Forces at the invitation of the deceased’s family.

The group was initially formed to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of U.S. service members in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality. The Patriot Guard positions itself to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters' chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines.

I live in the middle of Southern Baptists
They would never do something like that!

It is very easy to grip a narrow mind.

I think your priorities are screwed up (putting burning the flag first--which is pretty much just a symbolic act that doesn't need to deepen grief), but I agree that this group is the pits.

I was mystified at first by this group because it seems to me that if you want to be against the war, the best way is to protest at recruitment centers--before someone goes off and gets themselves killed. Which would be both understandable and moderately acceptable. But then it occured to me that this group wouldn't get what they wanted that way--attention.

Disrespect the dead and the mourners, and you get lots of attention as we see. Problem is, it completely undermines your organization and message. If they want people to agree with them and do something (anything) they've failed utterly by making themselves universally despised and their message dismissed.

Which, in a way, I suppose is good as the message is anti-gay. If anyone makes anti-gay folk look really, really bad--and supremely stupid!--it's this group.

I'm really looking forward to the day that they just piss off the wrong person. I mean, they ARE going to military funerals of military families. They even announce they're going to be there.

But see, to make sure that it'the issue's really taken care of, they'll have to kill all of them. I'm not saying it like it's a bad thing--I mean, they'll go to Heaven just like they said 'cuz they're true Christians and they'll die a martyr's death--but it's just an awful lot of work when a person's tired to make sure that everyone has at least three bullets in them.

Yeah, I think I'd have trouble not laughing my ass off for a headline like that. Some people have no reason to continue living in decent society that has even discovered penicillin. What happens to 'em just falls outside the realm of "My Problem."

Yeah, I don't think anyone is going to be surprised if we get a headline about someone going postal on these folk. Problem is they've got to be expecting that, and maybe they even want it. They really are attention..."whores" is such an inadequate word. But it really is like they'll do anything to get the most attention no matter how negative that attention is.

Meh, I was just copying down the notice. But, then again, considering the flag is an important part of a military funeral [draped over coffin, folded by honor guard and presented to next of kin] it can play an important psychological role for the deceased's family.
