Something has hijacked my browser and I can't find it. Random text is now highlighted as green hyperlinks that take me to a search site, and a new search bar keeps appearing on my toolbar.

I've emptied my temp files, dumped my cookies, run SpyBot, and looked in My Computer and Add/Remove programs.

This is windows XP BTW. What else is a poor computer idiot to do?

there is still something there that you have not eliminated, obviously.
run spybot again
this time, if it tells you it can not get rid of something...click the highlighted link and itll bring you to a site that tells you how to manually get rid of it.
have you run norton? assuming you have that or mcafee.

That happened on hubby's puter. *shudder*

I finally just installed Netscape. :D I've no idea if his IE still does it or not.

Yes, get rid of IE at all costs. 99% of the spyware exploits target it.

Firefox is a good choice.

mozilla.org will get you to it.

AVG is a pretty good virus detection, finds things that others miss.

The problem here is that you probably can't get online. Hmm, how did you post if your browser is hijacked?

Anyway. Trend micro have a free online virus check.

Adaware6 finds stuff that spybot misses You can find it at lavasoft.com

I had probelms too, and switched to Mozilla Firefox as my browser. It's great, t downloads fast, and it copies your favorites from IE so you don't lose anything. There are a few things it won't let me open (I think that's from its pop-up blocker) and for those I go back to IE, but for the most part, I've never looked back. Never had any more spyware problems either.

Run adaware6. Then run your antivirus with updated defs. Update spybot too and try again.

Adaware seems to get those spybot misses and vice versa. if you are using netscape, then I might have another idea.

I use Adaware, Spybot and SpyDoctor. All three are free. Between them all I pretty much get rid of everything. Also use Firefox at the mozilla site instead of IE. I've had alot better luck with Firefox than with IE.

There is a program for hijackers... it's called HiJack This.... Adaware & Spybot won't find it or fix it.... neither will mcafee or Norton....

BTW Firefox is great but DO NOT REMOVE IE...Firefox doesn't support certain types of fonts, Windows won't update without IE, and certain website won't reconize Firefox... Banks especially...

Go to Trend Anti-Virus

Click the "Scan Now! It's Free" link.

Trend is one of the leaders in Anti-Virus software. Their Housecall online scans will clean up just about anything. If it won't clean it just delete the files it won't clean.

AdAware fixed my problem.

Thank you thank you!

Remember to do the updates and run it at least once a week... and delete the negligent items. :)

Nag, nag, nag, nag....

That's me

I think I can keep the title of computer idiot because your question didn't even make sense to me.

Has anybody heard about that new virus that destroys C.D. drives and hijacks browsers and all sorts of evil things before the hard drive finally melts like ice cream on a hot texas day?

Thanks for the compliment yui

Ima sorry Carson, I wouldn't have joked except I saw where you said you fixed it. Also if it comes back cause it left a lil replicator that Hijack This program is free and is THE one to use for browser search page hijacks  :rose:

Thanks Lisa.....

I may be a newbie here and no on wants to listen but I've been cleaning up messed up computers for 20 years..... it'll be back... Adaware got the main install but not the back up that's stashed somewhere on your harddrive or in memory....

BTW the best way to run adaware is in safemode.... it'll catch a heck of a lot more of the spyware and especially malware that is in the normal backgrond because if it's running it can't fix it or sometimes even find it...
