An undetermined number of years ago, I read a story here that was so great, I've been unable to stop myself from calling it my "five-star" and comparing every other story to it.
As embarrassing as it is to admit, I am unable to find my five-star.
I don't remember the title, obviously, and I'm getting nowhere by flipping through pages. Actually, I don't remember anything that a search engine could narrow it down by. Therein lies the rub.
Its about a young boy growing up in a society where they alter the brains of the women to make them forget most things when they go to sleep. In this way, the women are essentially kept as slaves. The boy turned man rises through the hierarchy, eventually reaching the highest rank by undergoing a series of deadly trials. He finds a way to cure the women of their malicious change, but falls victim to the same malevolent brainwashing. (Its malicious AND malevolent, you see?) Eventually, the women and the man are cured.
Its a rather touching story that I still consider to be the best I've read. I would love to read it again. Thanks for any help you can provide.
