I'm ready to start writing a story I've tossed around in my head for over a year, and need some education: how do the various drugs that are commonly abused affect male and female libido and performance?

If I have characters abusing meth, or coke, or crack, or ecstasy, or Rohypnol, etc., what would real-world effects be in terms of consciousness, self-awareness, ability to consent, achieve and maintain erections, endurance, orgasms, etc. I just want to avoid writing nonsense such as having a character take a drug and nod off when in fact that drug would make someone hyper.

Any general guidance?

Agreed about Google, or other search engine. If you search for "effect of cocaine on sex" you will get a long list of links to check out. You will get a quicker, more authoritative, and probably more on-point answer to questions like these than you will get here.

There's also Shakespeare, who said this about the effect of alcohol in MacBeth: “Drink sir, is a great provoker of three things… nose painting, sleep and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes, and unprovokes; it provokes the desire but takes away the performance.”

Lazy authors can just invent drugs producing any desired effects. For actual substances, note that human physiological reactions can vary widely. A stimulating dose for Jan may be a knockout dose for Pat. As mentioned, Wikipedia is your friend here.

Many people have differing experiences with drugs (and sex on drugs). I sure there are many people out there who have different experiences with the same drug, whether it's weed, xtc, LSD, or alcohol. As others have said: Google is your friend: https://lmgtfy.com/?q=sex+and+drugs :D

I'd say don't worry too much about reality. 99% of the stories on this site are unrealistic and I'm not even talking about the SciFi and Fantasy stories... :D

Ditto. The spectrum of experiences with drugs/sex on drugs is so broad that if it’s a significant plot point, some of your readers will feel the descriptions speak directly to them and some will think your description’s offbase.

I think the only caution (to the extent possible without knowing your plot) is on the “ability to consent”—there’s technically not really an ability to consent to sex while one is high. Usually, in typical erotica and porn tropes, that technicality sort of goes out the window because it’s complex, unsexy legalese. But if you’re writing, for example, an erotic thriller or murder mystery where a character’s roofied, or s/he has sex under the influence that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred, then that could be something important to consider, and for lending credibility to your storytelling. Hope this is helpful; best of luck.

Maybe I can add that „a friend“ said that he himself had totally different experiences with the same drug. The mindset when taking the drug can have a massive influence on the trip.

Marijuana

You probably have an idea of how you expect them to work, but if you follow the advice already given it will be a range of responses. This information is a tool to advance or create conditions for your story.

I only have experience with weed and lsd and only recently with weed. You can find everything you need in a clinical sense but if you need experiences related I find Marijuana, while destroying my ability for cognitive focus, it heightens my erotic experience and ability to focus on my lover.

The best way I can describe it is that it creates a firewall between my senses and how I process the input they provide. This is also my experience when receiving pain. I am in a Ds relationship and it offers that same refocus or filter for the data my senses are providing

Alcohol increases desire but impairs performance.

If drunk enough every potential partner seems attractive.

Thinking again about the OP's question, this is an area where I'd be inclined to say, "Write what you know."

I've got a feeling that many readers will spot when a writer is writing with input coming only from research - some tiny but essential detail will be missing, particularly for something like drugs. If I was to lace drugs through a story, it would be a drug that I know.

Habitual users of drugs don't have sex.

Hmmm. This has not been my experience, and it comes in two flavors.

1) those that have sex in order to have the resources to get more drugs

2) They just do. Plenty of cokeheads of my acquaintance at one time were very sexually active. Pot I almost don't count as habit forming, but that does not stop the libido, in fact it lowers inhibitions.

You don't generally "take" rohypnol, you have it given to you, and often sex is the reason. meth, heroin, etc can be more all consuming, and may be closer to what you are talking about.

Rohypnol (flunitrazepam/"roofies") is famous as a date-rape drug, but it is also used recreationally as a club drug - in smaller doses it's a tranquilliser. Agree with the rest of this - drug users are a diverse bunch of people and generalisations are rarely reliable.

I have taken lots of drugs. Prescribed drugs. Many of them - perhaps most of them - have not agreed with me. But, as my GP says: 'Every body's different.' In my experience, sex was best when there were no drugs involved. From there, it's all down hill.

I can only share my own experiences. All events described in this post occurred beyond the relevant statutes of limitations, btw.

Marijuana: You didn't ask for this one, but it is the most common and best. Marijuana enhances sensual experiences. Food tastes better, colors are more vibrant, music sounds better, jokes are funnier. And sex is amazing. Orgasms last longer and are more intense.

LSD: Never had sex on acid. Never had any interest--I was too busy unlocking the secrets of the universe. I don't know if I could get hard on acid. Never tried.

Cocaine: Cocaine keeps me awake for hours which are mostly spent ingesting more come. It creates a general numbness, a crazy amount of confidence, and an inability to stop talking. It also leads to a lot of sex. Coke is like paint remover for panties. Every time I gave coke to a woman I got laid. 100%. I don't know if they were horny, grateful, or if they viewed it as transactional. The sex was long lasting, but not that great due to the numbing effect.

MDMA (precursor to MDA- ECSTASY) Put me and my partner in a great mood. Made us both affectionate and horny. Sex lasted most of the night. We were both raw in the morning. Couldn't even try sex again for three days.

Hope this helps. These were my experiences. I don't pretend to speak for anyone else.

Drugs... That you have mentioned... Some will make the person horny, other won't. One just puts them to sleep so they can be raped and blocks all the memory receptors. Some make the genitalia smaller. Some will help you lose weight, only because you don't eat, you just get high when you feel hungry. Most of the ones you mentioned will kill you eventually.

Pot... the only time I had sex when high it last for hours and hours. When we finished ( we were both high ) only twenty minutes had passed.

Most of the usual drugs of abuse, in my experience, do enhance sensation at first, but end up deadening it in the end ... they just don't provide the oomph they did in the beginning, and mostly are used to avoid the "down" that the user would otherwise experience.

The psychoactive drugs like psilocybin and LSD are a different case, because, as someone else pointed out, you get what you bring into the experience, and the effects are different not only from person to person but from one trip to the next.

The only erotic tale I've read on the subject that seemed to reflect reality was one that Athalia wrote, which she said was based on an experience she had in her college days (we discussed that when I was editing the story). Here's the link:

It depends a lot on the quality/purity of the psychedelic. I can state as a fact that good quality LSD fueled the best sex I've ever experienced. I'm not sure how long it lasted, but it was most of a beautiful night under the stars beside a lovely lake. The drug enhanced the physical aspect of sex tremendously. It increased stamina. It enhanced our mental/emotional connection, etc. (On the other hand, poorer quality LSD can actually inhibit … well, pretty much everything )

Thanks for the compliment! As the writer of the story, I can attest that the sensations were as close to what I described as I could get. Emily's "trip" in the story was actually a composite of a few I'd experienced in my younger, wilder days. But as Jehoram noted, stories that have a ring of truth are hard to find, possibly because the experiences themselves defy any attempts at verbalizing them.I did the best I could, but on re-reading it, I wonder if I really succeeded.

Sex with pot has always been good to me. My lovers tell me that it helps them from cumming too soon, and gives them better orgasms. It certainly helps me relax and get into a mind-state where orgasms come more easily.

Can't speak to any of the other drugs the OP mentioned, as I haven't tried them. But I don't like what they have done to some of my friends over the years.
