Do you have a link? A little back story on the inmate and why the courts made that decision are necessary before I'd be willing to voice an opinion. As they say there are three sides to every story....

Good point, I think. Is this to start the process or to continue at a problematic stage of the process or to correct to prevent life-threatening possibility during or as a result of the process?

To start the process? No. To move to a subsequent phase of the process when there's no medical threat in the current phase? No. Because it wasn't what they envisioned and they want to be returned to the original state? No. Because they are bored? No. Because they committed the crime to get someone else to pay for this? No. Because they feel they are something else other than what they started out to be? No.

The guy is in prison. Elective surgery shouldn't be covered by the state or government. It's bad enough people with real mental problems are given the green light to change their sexes (and normal people are expected to indulge their neurosis -- fuck that) but a convict; no fucking way. Why not give him liposuction and a neck lift while they're at it.

After reading the article it still leaves many unanswered questions. A trans person being involved in violent confrontations because of who they are is common. Many are rejected by their families etc.. Why was the inmate killed? Did she react in self defense? Hard to tell cuz Texas.
Opinion wise I would have to say if the violence is in reaction to the violence that many trans face on a daily basis because of who they are then by all means go ahead with the gender reassignment and if she is found to be of no harm to the gen pop then reassign her to a women's prison. If the perpetrator has anger and impulse issues and is a threat to others then no. Maybe the gender reassignment but not transfer. But having gender reassignment in a man's prison would be a whole other level of difficulties with a myriad problems of it's own.

The issue is that the inmate is male. Reassigning a male to a female facility would be improper. Separating the inmate from GenPop would be cruel and unusual punishment. Moreover, just because the inmate is on the bottom of the pecking order shouldn't give that inmate more "choices" in the "degree of acceptability" of their incarceration.

It comes down to the fact that life is tough. It's even tougher inside. Deal with it and remember that your bad choices are what put you into that position in the first place. So don't make similar choices in the future.


As an aside, I find it interesting that "some people" believe that the government doesn't "owe" anyone elective medical procedures yet those same people believe that illegal immigrants waiting on extradition, and who want an abortion while in US custody, should have one paid for by the taxpayers.
