Somewhere, in the 1950's existed a beautiful neighborhood, with gently manicured lawns, with shiny barbecues on the perfectly placed patio. Where the children played in suburban bliss, on bright new bikes and the men talked politics over pretty picket fences. But this is not their story, this is the story of some of the women who lived there, these beautiful women came together one day and it changed their lives forever.

*********

Jane fussed over her husband, Thomas as he left for work, making sure his tie was straight and his lunch was packed. She gave him a little kiss as he walked out the door, and sighed out loud when she heard his car pull out of the driveway.

She patted her hair, and pulled her apron off. She was very excited, today she was going to her new neighbor Betty's house. Along with Alice, who lived down the street and Sophia, the wife of a local movie producer who lives up on the hill had even volunteered her time after she saw the letter that the local ladies guild had written to the newspaper; they were going to help Betty sort though the boxes, since her husband was stationed at the nearby base, and didn't have the time.

Jane especially noticed how beautiful the women were, so she made sure that her raven black hair was perfect and there was no lipstick on her teeth, as she grabbed the casserole that she had made the night before from the fridge and placed it in the special carrier she had for it. She walked out the door, and headed across the street to Betty's with a big smile on her face and a flutter in her stomach.

Jet was up early as always and gone before the sun had brightened the sky, he had left the drive way with his headlights on and no doubt Betty would not see him again till he come home with them on......Long days apart were just part of the norm in this house hold.

Betty stood in the lounge surrounded by boxes, her reddish brown hair neatly pinned and her clothes neat and tidy. She wore a simple yellow and white dress with yellow heels she looked at odds with the chaos around her, but hopefully today that would be fixed. Some of the neighbors had offered to help her and she was so grateful. Jet was always too tired or too busy...or he would grumble that it was her house so she should know were she wants things.

Betty shook her head at the mess she didn't really know were to start, so she put it off till the ladies arrived. Walking into the kitchen she made some coffee and some finger sandwiches for the ladies. It was the least she could do to thank them.

Alice hurried down the stairs, her heels clicking sharply on the wooden steps. Patting her dark honey blonde hair into place, she mentally ran through the plan for the day. She had sent Peter off to work a few minutes before, his briefcase in one hand, his lunch in another. Her would be in the county seat today, which was the next town over, dealing with a rather unpleasant case, so wouldn't be able to come home for lunch. "All the better," she thought to herself, "I won't have to stop and rush home to fix for him later."

She was headed to meet with a few of the other neighborhood women at the home of the Crocker's. They had all converged at the same time yesterday, each bringing various sustaining treats to get the new neighbors through the days of unpacking ahead of them. When they found out that Betty would have to deal with it all on her own, they wouldn't take no for an answer as they planned to come over and help her get the house put to rights as quickly as possible.

Grabbing the Tupperware cake tote that contained the extra chocolate pound cake she had made the night before, she opened the screen door and headed up the street, calling out a friendly greeting to Jane as she saw her come out of her own house.

Sophie was so bored that she had became reduced to reading the local newspaper! In the community section she noticed that a new family had arrived in Pleasentville the Crocker’s and that the ladies of the community had been encouraged to pitch in and help them.

Hmmm she thought toying with a strand of her long blond hair. Pitch in and help? Giggling she looked down at the satin dress she was wearing perhaps she should change. Normally Bill wouldn’t encourage her to mix with the locals but he wasn’t here to object.

Thirty minuets later she was dressed in her slouch cloths, her hair in a pony tail and wearing no makeup whatsoever!. She briefly glanced in the mirror liking what she saw."Beautiful as always!" she told her reflection twirling in front of the mirror.

Stopping short, she wondered if she should bring something, what though? she wasn’t the type to bake a pie! Giggling again she ran off to the wine cellar to defiantly come back with 3 bottles of her husbands favorite, and very expensive champagne;that would teach him to bury her in this small town!

"I am going out visiting, I won't need the car, and I wont be back for supper so feel free to take the night off," she advised the shocked housekeeper as she breezed from the house! This day was looking up and Sophie actually enjoyed the walk to Betty Crocker's house thankful that she had elected to wear flats not her heels.

Thirty minutes later she was standing on the door step wondering if she should have stayed at home; she wouldn’t fit in...what if they didn’t like her?

Sophia needed change and this was the first step. Squaring her shoulders and plastering a smile on her exquisite face she knocked boldly on the door……..

Jane walked quickly across the street, pausing briefly to wave at Alice who was coming up the street. Jane viewed the front yard with a critical eye as she noticed the slightly overgrown lawn and the untrimmed bushes. She sighed; knowing that the Crocker's were new to town, so they should be cut some slack. But she did make a mental note to herself to mention it to Betty, it would just not do to have front lawn problems with the HOA. She knocked on the front door and smiled hugely at Betty when she opened it.

"Good morning dear! Oh my! I just love your dress!" Jane said as she came in, noting the chaos of the boxes in the front room. "Where can I put this?" she asked gesturing to her casserole, and walking right into the kitchen, "Oh and Alice is right behind me!" she said as the doorbell rang.

Alice smiled at Betty as the door was opened for her. "Hi, Betty! Are you ready for us to tame the moving monster?" Giggling at her little joke, she handed the cake tote to Betty. "Here...something for later when we start to run out of energy!" Following Betty into the kitchen and seeing Jane, Alice smiled. "Good to see you again, Jane!"

Betty smiled as Jane and Alice arrived she was some what shocked by the food gifts as well as the generous offer to help "Thank you so much ladies, you really didn't have to go to so much trouble. Although the Casserole and cake both smell heavenly and put my tiny sandwiches to shame" she smiled showing she was not hurt but grateful for the gifts.

"Just in the Kitchen will be fine, it is the only room in the house in any sort of order...but then I normally love to cook, when I am not dealing with this" she gestured to the boxes before following both Jane and Alice into the kitchen. Just then she heard a loud knock on the door, raising an eyebrow at Jane and Alice she was wondering who it could be as she had not been expecting anyone else.

As Betty opened the door she smiled as she looked at a blond women carrying three bottles of Champagne, she looked uncomfortable but friendly enough "Hello.....Can I help you?" she smiled friendly and welcoming to the stranger.

As the door opened a beautiful red head stood there smiling, "Hello.....Can I help you?”

Sophie looked back at her smiling “Hmm I’m from up the hill, I came to help, I er well I don’t bake so I brought you these”

With that she thrust the bottles of Champagne into the startled woman's arms

"They are from my husbands best stash, but while the cats away!" she giggled nervously.

"Er umm may I come in,?

A little shocked by the generous champaign gift Betting fumbled but thankfully didn't drop the bottles "Oh thank you...sure come in" she stepped back from the door to allow her to enter "The others are in the kitchen I will follow you" she nodded the way and then shut the door with her hip.

Entering the room Betty went to make the introductions but couldn't "Sorry I didn't catch your name.." she turned to the pretty blond "I was distracted by your gift" she said with a smile as she put them it in the fridge.

Sophie stepped across the threshold and preceded her into the kitchen.

She looked around at the others assembled there really hoping there wouldn't be many more. Woman usually didn't like her as a rule, although they seemed to accept her well enough, offering nothing but smiles and warmth; bother her husband not to have allowed her to mingle earlier. Now things were going to be different she hoped, her fingers were firmly crossed behind her back for luck.

"Sorry I didn't catch your name.." This brought her back from her musings and she could feel herself blushing, an annoying habit from childhood that she hated and had been unable to eradicate!

Smiling brightly she confessed,"I probably didn't give it, sorry I'm a bit nervous, Ive been confined to my pen for a while , it's been months since I have had to be social. I'm Sophia and I am very pleased to meet you all."

Forgoing a hand shake she offered each woman a hug. "Which of you is Betty?" Suddenly feeling shy her flurry of talk and action came to an abrupt halt.

What was she doing... what would these strangers think of her? for some reason standing in this small kitchen in suburbia proper, the answer to her own question seemed to really really matter to her.

Stepping forward to accept the hug, Alice smiled warmly at the newcomer. "Hi Sophie! I'm Alice. Betty is the lovely lady that answered the door, and this is Jane." Finishing with the introductions, Alice looked around the room at the various piles of boxes. "Well, Betty, as this is your home, where shall we start? Coffee to fortify us, or just jump in to the unpacking?"

Betty accepted the hug from Sophie and thens smiled and waved as she was introduced by Alice. "It's so nice of you all to come and help me....my husband well he is just to busy or not interested" she added with a slight frown but smiled again when Alice asked where to start.

"Well, Betty, as this is your home, where shall we start? Coffee to fortify us, or just jump in to the unpacking?"

"Well Coffee sounds sure good to me, As long as you ladies are not in to much of a hurry....and then I guess the living room, it has the most to put away as does the den and then its just really finishing the dinning room and kitchen but I have done most of that." she was speaking like she was going through a check list...which she was it was just in her head.

"Wow I am sorry Ladies I didn't realize there was so much left to do........" she was really worried she was asking to much.

Jane accepted Sophie's hug with a smile, the other woman showed a little consternation on her face and Jane thought she might be a little "new" to all of this neighborly affection. Jane put a hand on Sophie's shoulder to reassure her and looked over at the piles of boxes, listening to the other ladies discuss coffee.

"Coffee sounds delightful to me, ladies, and I am just so wonderfully excited to finally meet you all, you know how dreadfully boring it can be at home. I love my husband, but you can only vacuum the front entryway so many times!" Jane tittered nervously, after realizing she might be talking too much. She quieted down and smiled over at the other ladies.

"Betty can I help you get the cups or perhaps prepare the coffee? Or, you know we could break into that wonderful looking champagne!" she giggled.

Sophie felt ....well she felt overwhelmed and almost jumped when she felt Jane's hand rest on her shoulder. The contact burned through the thin fabric! Surprised she stood her ground dismissing her reaction as not having had sex for months now...She wasn't into women, was she?

She listened to their chatter content to just go with the flow until the champagne was mentioned.

"If were going to have coffee I also brought this," reaching into her purse she pulled out a small bottle of Brandy. "We could add a splash to start us off couldn't we?" Her voice had dropped to a whisper like a small child about to raid the cookie jar, as she looked from one to the other of her newly found friends, her expression innocently expectant............

Laughing, Alice raised her hand. "I'll vote for a bit of the bubbly before we get started! Betty...do you have any orange juice to mix it with?"

Betty grinned "I sure do Orange juice should be in the fridge, I'd say we will earn it" I giggle and go to the box marked crystal and fish around and find champaign flutes from her wedding "about time these were christened" she went to the sink washed them out then placed them on the bench before getting the Oj and champaign holding up the champaign she asked "Who wants to do the honor's?"

"Please allow me ladies!" Jane said as she stepped in close to Betty, taking the bottle from her hands and working the cork. Feeling it loosen between her fingers she pointed the bottle away from the women around her, cringing slightly till she heard the satisfying POP! And the bubbly poured forth down her hands as she giggled happily and poured it into the glasses that Betty proffered her.

She was happily licking the champagne from her fingers when she noticed the other women watching her, and she dropped her hands guiltily.

"Let me wash these, you gals get started!" Jane said as she turned towards the sink.

Sophie watched the champagne froth and foam as it coated Jane's slender fingers slightly surprised to see her happily start to clean them up, her small pink tongue avidly darting in and out.

As Jane dropped her hands guiltily, Sophie averted her haze just as quickly wondering what was getting into her.

She raised her glass and smiled trying to cover her own inner confusion.

"What shall we drink to?"

Alice watched as Jane started licking her fingers. A small blush rose in her cheeks as the thought of how erotic she looked doing so crept through her mind. She couldn't help but wonder what Jane's husband thought...Shaking her head and hoping no one had noticed her staring or her blush, she took a glass and raised it.

"How about drinking to new friends?" Alice said brightly. Looking around at the small group of women, she chuckled before continuing, "I have the strangest sense that we are going to wind up being wonderful friends..."

Betty

Betty admired confident people so when Jane stepped up and took the cold heavy champaign bottle from her she was smiling with admiration, she giggled when the cork popped and the froth spilled out the neck of the bottle running down the cool glass sides and coating Jane's fingers.

She was about to hand her a cloth when she saw her lick the champaign from her fingers, smiling she had to ask "Is it good?" she was only playfully teasing and felt bad when Jane quickly went to wash her hands. "I was just teasing, her let me help" she placed the open bottle on the counter "you ladies pour" and then she turned to guide Jane to the sink.

Turning on the tap she stood beside Jane her hip brushing hers and quickly grabbed her hands and put them under the water, teasingly she whispered to her "So was it any good? the bottles look expensive" she winked hoping that Jane had not been offended by her comments. She ran her own hands over Janes, not really thinking about it just trying to be helpful "Your skin is lovely" with that she turned off the tap and handed her a towel. "all done...now to toast" she smiled at Alice, Sophie and Jane "I'll drink to that, its so nice of you ladies to help me out like this" she said to Alice who suggested they drink to friends.

Jane could only nod at Betty and smile at her compliment. Betty hands on Jane's as they washed up together made Jane blush, so it was difficult for her to look up and raise her glass as they toasted to new friends. She took a deep drink and averted her eyes from the other women. Strengthened by the liquid she set down her glass and smiled brightly, linking her hand to Betty and walking with her into the front room.

"Well what shall we do about this? she said brightly as the other two came into the room. She began to pick her way through the maze and spied a projector box.

"Ohh Betty a projector! Do you have any films?" she asked excitedly.

Seeing Jane go into the living room Betty asked Alice, Sophie to come along too. The room was covered in boxes it was an disorganized mess, her husband Jet had opened several boxes and helped himself the contents not bothering to actually finish unpacking it or to put anything away, other boxes were just stacked on each other taking up living space.

"Ohh Betty a projector! Do you have any films?" Jane asked drawing Betty's attention again as she stood with Alice and Sophie. "I think Jet has some but I am not sure what box..." she looked around nothing was labeled because she had packed in a hurry because they had been transfered suddenly "We do have a great film of our honeymoon I tell you Tuscany was amazing...I would love to show you, I just don't know which box it would be in"

Helping to look through some of the boxes, Alice stood up from rummaging one of them to exclaim, "Look at what I found!" in a sing song voice as she sways her hips in a half dance and walks back to the projector box, a couple of film canisters in her hand. "Think one of these might be it?"

She handed the flat tins to Betty, one of them with a smudged label that was unreadable, the other with no label at all.

Sophie grabbed the bottle of the counter and sipping her wine followed the others into the living room shocked at how much work remained!

She perked when she heard the mention of a movie projector.

"Oh! I love movies," she gushed. "Had I known I could have brought some, my husband has a whole collection, and I 'm even in one of them..a tiny part really......"

Her voice trailed off as she realized she'd been rambling on, blushing she added, "Opps! I'm going on, perhaps another time?"

"I would love to see your vacation Betty! Shall we set it up?" Jane asked excitedly. She looked over at Sophie who was talking about her husband's films.

"You know, Sophie I haven't seen any of his movies, but I'll bet that you outshine the lead actress!" Jane gushed over at Sophie, giving her a small wink as she moved boxes to make room for the projector, and for the four of them in the front room. It was a little dusty, so she wiped her palms along the back of her capris.

"There that should do it," she said as she looked down at the small clear circle surrounded by boxes that she had cleared with the projector slightly to the side for easy setting up, "it's a little cozy, ladies but I think we can manage! Bring the champagne, Alice! Betty do you know how to set this up?"
