Pleasantly surprised after skimming

Another Chicklet inspired thread.

I have only ever read one story where after I began skimming I HAD TO go back and read the whole thing. It was Of The Deepest Dye by Victoria Veiss.

She had asked for specific reasons about the scores she was receiving, gave a link and when I found it was Gay Male and not a style that I was fond of I began skimming after the first few paragraphs. I skimmed until nearly the end of the story and then found I HAD TO return to the beginning and read the whole thing. I'm very pleased that I did.

That was really good = )

I'm not really in to gay male stories, but anything well done is worth reading = )

Thanks for sharing!

But you didn't answer the question Chicklet. Have you ever skimmed and then HAD to read the whole thing properly?

I only put the link there for illustration. Glad you liked it though.:)

I almost always do that--I'm a speed reader, and unless something grabs me or I'm reading in order to give crit, I zoom right on through at about 45 seconds per page. I'm attention-deficient where most stories are concerned. There are not many available free on the Net that make me read word-for-word from the very first sentence. I'm always happy when I find them, though!

I've had that happen to me a few times, usually when someone writes to me and asks for my opinion. It's such a great surprise when that happens. One that stands out is Qickless, but I don't think he posts at Lit.

More usually though it's the opposite that happens. I'll start out reading something and end up skimming without realizing I'm doing it. Then I'll get halfway through and realize I have no idea what the story is about.

Oh and I liked Of The Deepest Dye too when I read it.

No. I have never had to go back because I'm a speed reader. That isn't skimming. I absorb the whole story fast.

It irritates my wife (along with a lot of things I do). I read a newspaper article in 15 seconds. She takes 3 minutes and I can relate more of it than she can. It isn't surprising that she throws things at me when I read over her shoulder.

Still, I've been doing it for over 30 years and she hasn't hit me yet. It isn't that she can't - she aims to miss.

Mrs Ogg doesn't miss every time.

She cannot miss every time, Ogg.

How else can you explain that cream cake on your head?
