Planting the Seed

I'm thinking a novice gardener wants to learn about germinating seeds before spring comes. Attends classes at the local garden center. The language of gardening is fertile with sexual innuendos. I think in the hands of a lighter writer than I am this could be a lot of fun.

Not sure if the main character is a young woman (newlywed? new to suburbia?) or a more mature person , maybe recently retired with time on their hands? Might even be a widow or widower?

The other character could be a classmate or instructor...

My first thought on seeing the title without reading the rest:

Young, newlywed couple in their first house. They hire a gardner/lawn care specialist who is an older man. When the wife finally gives in to his advances, the phone rings and it's her husband. At some point the husband asks whats going on and she can say that she's watching the gardner plant the seeds...

The next door neighbor is a myopic nerd botanist who wanders over to observe the plantings. S/he is alarmed that the "wrong" species and varieties are being installed. S/he berates the cheating couple for their sloppiness, but is persuaded to join their fuckings. Hilarity ensues.

I like this idea. And while it could be a lighter story, it also could be treated as a more personal self-discovery story. I imagine the heroine of the story being a bit naive and always thought of flowers as being romantic, and she's more into romance than sex. Since childhood, she's loved florals, and her apartment is covered with floral wallpapers. But she never considered the sexual side of flowers (which are, afterall, elaborate reproductive organs). Learning about flowers is at first overwhelming, and for a while she can't look at flowers without seeing them as nothing but sexual organs... her wallpaper now seems pornographic to her. But eventually for her, it's about appreciating that sexuality can also be intensely beautiful.
