Blind jumps weren't at all unusual. They were sometimes very necessary to get out of a tight spot. The pilot of the RSC37 transport just happened to think that two Asix missiles homing in on his craft constituted a "tight spot". So, as he shouted to the Special Mission Force team leader he was making a blind jump, he engaged the field encaser. He didn't have time to program any coordinates into the NavComp. See, usually, in a blind jump, the NavComp selects a pre-programmed destination and controls course for the vessel.

Those two Asix missiles were about to change all of that, though. One of them exploded just as the field encaser enveloped the ship, just as the vessel was beginning to slip from realspace into otherspace where it could travel faster than light. The resulting concussive blast from the missile knocked out the navigation sensor array. That wasn't a good thing. Not at all, because now the jump truly was blind. The ship had no destination. It was traveling at three times the lightspeed threshold, tumbling from a shock wave, and it had no idea where it was headed.

The pilot, a LT from the 2nd Division assigned to the SMF team, shouted and cursed as he banged on his flight console. "The fucking encaser control system is jammed! If we don't come out of otherspace right now we could hit a shadow and it'll be over!"

What he meant was the encaser, which is more properly called the dynamic field encaser, is a device that projects a field of stable particle flux atoms over the ship to protect it and its occupants from the space/time distortions caused by entering otherspace, had its circuits fused. In otherspace, where the laws of physical, or realspace, didn't exist, faster than light travel was possible. The only trouble was there were shadows of objects that existed in realspace. It was believed these shadows were made up of anti-matter. But, since no one had ever actually struck one of these shadows, it wasn't known for sure. At any rate, with the transport's navigational array gone, they had no way to navigate around the shadows.

Major Harper, team leader, started to say something when he realized the circuit panel was directly over his head. He pointed to it, and Sgt. Major Sworddancer raised his sword from his seat across the aisle and cut into the panel. The ship buckled, and then reverted to realspace.

Out the front viewport was a very large blue and green mass. Alarm klaxons began to wail, the ship began to tumble, and several of the scientists screamed.

Harper started to get up from his seat to go to the pilot's console, but the inertial forces of the spinning pinned him in. The transport entered the atmosphere of the planet, the bucking and spinning becoming more pronounced.

The pilot applied thusters here and anti-grav drive there until one or both of them failed. The transport did right itself as it descended through cloud cover, but then its nose dipped sharply down. The pilot cursed as he applied retro-thrusters to get the nose back to positive pitch. The main console power had long since gone, as the tumble through the atmosphere had fused all of the main circuits. Somehow, by some miracle of chance, enough reserve power had been maintained by the landing gear's emergency batteries to allow the gear to drop into place and lock.

And then there was a great sound of the snapping of trees, and screeches and groans from resisting metal. The transport rotated 360 degrees before pitching sharply upwards and stopping with a sudden jolt.

The craft now sits on the steep bank of a wide riverbed. There is a very shallow stream moving lazily through the river bed that pools up in places along its route. The nose of the transport sits out of the water, while the aft section rests in a half-meter of water. To the North, the craft's flight path can be seen, as there are broken tree tops and scorched grass. To the West, directly in front of the craft, is a dense jungle of unusual foliage and plant life. To the East, across the riverbed, there is a less dense jungle, with the much taller trees. Following the river to the South leads to short grassy savannahs, with the appearance of black rock jutting out from a bend in the river. Looking towards the southern horizon, snow-covered peaks and an active volcanoe can be seen.

One item of interest is several hundred meters from the transport. There is a large, green, quadruped animal with a long, slender neck standing on the river bank. The animal has taken an interest in the people from the transport who are now standing on the river bank. However, the animal doesn't appear to be that much impressed by them, because it thrusts its head under the water and re-emerges with a mouthful of slimy, water plant that it chews lazily.

Harper glanced up at the dinosaur looking creature, then back down at the calf-deep water he was standing in. He looked up, seeing binary stars directly over his head. That meant it was mid-day. But, how long did a day last on this world?

His handheld comm unit showed NO SIGNAL in its screen. Harper thumbed the search button. The comm unit displayed SATELLITE NOT IN RANGE.

He looked over at the pilot, who was holding a bandage to a nice gash in his forehead. "How long was our jump?"

"Twenty-eight seconds," the LT replied.

Harper nodded. They could have gotten anywhere in the galaxy in 28 seconds. They could be 2 light years from their carrier battle group, or they could be 28 light years from it. With the comm unit not picking up a relay satellite, it was good bet they were a lot farther away from anything charted than he liked.

"We're lost," Harper told his team. "Fucking lost. Bigger than shit. So, think about that while we unload the rest of our gear from the transport and start looking for something to make shelter out of."

Atal sat in the back with the rest of the personnel on board the damaged ship. He heard what the pilot said and didn't like it. Then the Major did something rather...bold. He had the Sergeant Major cut the circuits. And cut them he did. The result was almost immediate. The ship bucked and then reverted to realspace.

Things seemed to be fine for a moment, but only a moment, when alarms started to go beserk, and for good reason. The ship started to spin and buck, making a beeline for the planet that could occasionally be glimpsed out the windows. The spinning and bucking got more pronounced when the ship hit atmosphere, and the pilot tried his best to get the ship back under control, but to no avail.

Atal continued to sit there, occasionally getting smacked in the face by some loose object that was being tossed around by the bucking and spinning of the ship. Then the ship came to a stop. Suddenly and violently. Atal was tossed forward by the impact, his progress halted by an rather unfortunate scientist. Atal gave his apologies to the poor man as he got up and checked himself. No significant injuries, but his face was a little bruised and bloody from whatever it was that kept hitting him in the face. He didn't know what it was, nor did he really care at the moment.

Atal hit the button to open the hatch, but lo and behold, it didn't open. So he made it open, by pulling the emergency latch and throwing his weight against it. He then stepped out into the sunlight and the sandy ground of what appeared to be a wide river bed. He looked around some, making sure his handgun was readily available on his hip as he did.

By the time he got back to the hatch, just about everyone had left the ship, including the pilot.

"Let's do that again!" said Atal, his voice dripping with sarcastic enthusiasm. "Bloody hell. You call that a landing? That has got to be the worst atmospheric reentry and landing in the history of space travel. Hell, I bet those Apollo guys had better landings than that."

Sergeant Major Cormac "Smokey" Sworddancer stepped out of the wrecked transport and into the light of the binary suns. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from one of the pouches on his belt and pulled one out, replacing the pack and lighting it up.

The light gleamed off his bright armour and the intricate effigies of his acquired medals worked onto its surface.

"Tis a fine mess we've found ourselves in Major," he said, his rifle strapped across his back. He took a long pull and exhaled, blowing rings of smoke.

"So whats the plan then?"

Rishka had been shown to the medical bay on the ship that had rescued her, along with some of the other scientists from Phylos, the injurys she sustained were few and so she was able to help by using her healing tallents to take care of others who were more saverly injured.

Rishka kept her white wings folded down as close to her body as she was able she really hated these inclosed spaces, the rooms such as the medical bay,the mess hall, and the quarters she had been given wernt too bad and she could streatch her wings a little, but the halls were another matter.

Shaking off those thoughts she moved to her next pacent her golden eyes looking over his injurys her long black hair was braided down her back so that it wouldnot get in her way as she moved her hands over his wounds checking for broken bones that may need set before she begain to heal.

Rishka stood around 4ft in hight and waeghed little more than 65lbs her bones were much like that of a bird hollow so that her wings would be albe to lift her for flight, she was dressed in a white loose fitting halter like top and matching skirt her arms were decorated with a gold band one on each.

Once done with him, assuring herself that he would be well and all that was needed now was rest she moved to the next person and noticed them relax a small glimmer of releif in her eyes it wasnt the first time she had seen such a look her kind were known for there healing above anything else, and tho Rishka reolized this was a good thing at times she wished her people were able to defend themselves so that they didnt need to rely on others to protect them as much.

Rishka continued to care for the injured until later in the evening before making her way to the messhall to see if she could find something to eat before going to her chambers to meditate.

Harper looked at Cormac, and with a shrug said, "Survival is the first order of business. We need to find suitable shelter, and of course do a short range recon to locate edible plants, animals, and what have you. Test this water, test the air, all that. Who knows how long we will be here. Wherever the hell 'here' is."

Harper moved closed to the SarMajor. "One thing's for sure, we gotta keep an eye on these scientists and make sure none of them freaks out. We're trained for this, they're not, and make sure the younger guys remember that. SarMajor, you've got to help me do our absolute best to make sure morale stays high, even given the fact that we may very well never make it home again."

Upriver, to the North, there were dark thunderclouds appearing. As the twin suns began to dip farther into the Western horizon, the sky grew darker. Flashes of lightning could be seen from the rain clouds. It looked as if rain was indeed headed their way and would be upon them soon.

The large reptilian type animal that had been feeding from the bottom of the small pool had turned and lumbered into the jungle. Overhead, several large bird-type creatures with leathery wings soared the winds blowing in ahead of the thunderclouds.

Seth "Grunt" Salem

"Lets do that again" It sounded like one of his team, but he couldn't remember who, but soon the dissiness began to clear

Seth raised his eyebrows in an attempt to open his eyelids. He was partially sucessfull. Lifting himself off his back he ranhis head straight into the bottom of one of the benches lining side walls of the section of the transport he was in.

hmm, well mystery of the lost conciousness solved

Seth has been running from one end of the room to the other in an attempt to get back to his seat. he had been around some of the passengers, ready to intercept them and attempt to pacify them should the stress of being fired upon be a missile cause them to run for the pilots cabin. As soon as they had reverted to realspace and he winced with the blaring colision alarms Seth realized he had more important issues than blocking a doorway, issues like getting himself strapped down into a seat so he didn't become momentarily airborn and then quite suddenly not airborn anymore upon impact.

Apparently he hadn't made it in time, it was a crowded room after all. Lifting his arms to the bench he slid himself out from under it and attempted to stand again, this time sucessfully, although he realized he was dripping blood down onto the floor from above his hair line. Feeling around he decided that it wasn't serious or life threatening, and probably wouldn't require stitches anyway. Taking a few wobbly steps before snaping back into reality he crossed the room and entered the back compartment, to see the ramp leading down into a stream.

Leaving the ship he looked about the area, it seemed the sun gave off an orange tint to everything. Seth frowned and wiped at his eye, his fingers comming away red. At least i don't have to find water. Splashing his face he looked up from his crouch and nodded to Atal, agreeing that the landing could have gone better. Ah well, at least they didn't need pressure suits. That was at least one thing they had going for them the Ancient Apollo mission didn't.

"Right you are sir," Cormac said to Harper.
"Alrigh' lads, fan out, give me a 15 meter spread, no sound." He said barking orders to the well trained squad. He slung his rifle off his back and turned the safety off holding it at ready.
"Move out!"

Rishka hadnt quite made it to the mess hall of the ship when it begain spinning going out of control some rescue she thought as she did the only thing she was able in the small space of the walk way, with nothing to hold on too she tucked herself into as small a ball as she could folding her wings down around her to protect herself from flying objects and closing her eyes prayed.

Rishka felt for a moment as tho she was suspended in the air and if she hadnt known better it almost felt as if she were flying but only this was a little more frightning then suddenly she felt the impact as the ship crashed and she was slamed into a wall at the far end of the hall she had been standing in.

she layed there for a few moments simply breathing in and out and opening her eyes before sitting up slowly to check for broken bones, and winced a little as she stood finding that tho it wasnt broken she had twisted or simply sprained her ankle, and had a few more minor cuts and bruses to add to the ones she already had, and was thanking the gods that her wings hadnt been damaged.

Remembering the pacents in the medical bay she slowly made her way to them to make sure they were alright and was glad to see that they were no worse than they had been. Now that she had seen they were alrigt her closterphobia was beginning to kick in and she needed to find something to do or get the hell of the ship.. Hearing someone banging against something Rishka made her way twards the noise in time to see some of the soldjers who had rescued them leaving the ship, and followed hoping to get some fresh air, and spread her wings a little.

Rishka new it wasnt good to sneak up on anyone, but in all honesty she hadnt been all that quiet and new that if they hadnt been distracted and trying to figure out where they were then they would have noticed her a little sooner. She stood there in awe watching the dinosaure like creature and wanted to fly with the ones in the air but she wasnt sure if they were a threat or not.

She took a deep breath of the clean air greatful at least to be outside and begain relaxing a little as her phobeia begain to ease. Seeing that some of the men were wounded from the crash she cleared her throat so that they would know she was there before speaking watching as they spoke and one gave the orders for the men to move out... is there anything i can do to help ?

Harper and some of his team had retrieved most of the useful gear from the downed transport. Harper noted the ship was listing at an odd angle again, and the current from the river was getting stronger. It was probably that the bank was getting weaker from the current. Maybe the transport was settling under its weight.

The equipment from the ship wasn't much. There were a few extra carbines and handguns they could hand out to the scientists should they need to. A M920 Squad Assault Weapon (electro-fusion magazine fueled plasma/particle beam rifle), extra 10mm ammo crates, flares, all kinds of wiring, some emergency ration kits (not enough for everyone), and other miscellaneous stuff.

Harper noticed the sky getting darker, as the twin suns began to settle on the horizon. The rain clouds were moving overhead now, the once distant sound of thunder booming around them. Lightning strikes were common, popping all over the place at random. And then the deluge began.

After a few minutes, someone complained that the ship was sinking. One of the SMF team operators realized two things: one, they were in a semi-tropical climate where frequent rainshowers caused flash floods, and two, it was raining right now. The ship wasn't sinking. The river was rising. Quickly.

Seth "Grunt" Salem

Seth returned from his patrol, fanning out the distance Cormac had advised. While in this screen he and the rest of the team had scoured the area looking for any signs that the group was in extra trouble, more trouble than crash landing on a foreign planet anyway.

Seth came back to the ship and flashed a thumbs up to Cormac before following the rest of the group back into the ship to strip out it's useful contents. A faint smile game to his lips when he helped haul out the M920, it was much more heavy duty a weapon than even his MG12 beam rifle. The beam rifle certainly dished out punishment, but the M920 could barely be referred to as a portible weapon.

Seth made sure to take stock mentally of the snooping gear, and other electronic aids they had available to them. Aids that would be irreplacible if lost or damaged. He was still looking over the supplies they had when he heard someone mention that the river was flooding. Suprized he looked up and realized how foolish he had been, the lush folige and swampy land was exactly what he should have expected of a flood plain.

Grimacing he turned to the team leader, "Sir, anyway we can get this crate airborn again? i know we just unpacked it, but i doubt a better shelter is going to be readily available hmm?"

Seth looked back up to the sky, and it appeared night was falling fast, the two suns seemed to fall together, which was a curiosity. Perhaps both the planet and one sun orbited the other, and rotation of this rock was perfect today to time to the sunsets within minutes of each other. either way Seth knew it was going to get very dark, and the constant flashes of lightning were not going to help anyone's eyes adjust.

Rishka figured that the men ether had not heard her or were ignoring her and so discided to do some investagating of her own, looking for any plant life she might recgognize and be able to use for healing purposes, or maybe some new plant life the scientests could study and use in there reserch.

she took to the sky enjoying the feel of the wind on her wings, making sure to take care and watch for any of the creatures on land as well as in the air. Remembering that the men on the ground were looking for shelter she decided to keep an eye out for possabilitys as well, there were a few caves in some cliff's not far off but as to wether they were in habited or not she didnt know and decided it would be best if she simply told the men about them and let them investegate.

Rishka returned in time to see and hear that the ship was sinking due to the rain and flooding wanting to help she once again asked if there was anything she or the other scientests could do to help save the ship forgetting for the moment about the caves as she tryed to help.

The pilot, an ADC Fleet Division officer, came running up the bank against the swiftly rising water. In an answer to Seth's question, he looked at the major and yelled over the sound of the downpour.

"Reactor coolant leaked within the housing. The plasma drive manifolds were de-atomized, and most of the fuel-reversal cells were polarized. We don't have any internal power, and no chemical thrusters at all. This ship won't ever fly again, sir!".

Harper nodded his head. He turned to the small, winged creature. "If you can fly in this rain, get up ahead with a hand light," he shouted as he tossed her one, "and lead the group to the closest cave away from the riverbed. We've got about five minutes before we are all under water! My team will take point and rear gaurd behind everyone else!"

Harper then looked around and shouted some more, "Grab whatever you can that you know won't float away! Store the heavy shit in the ship that we know is waterproof, we don't have time to carry everything out of here! Move, people! We don't get paid by the hour!"

As Joshua walked back from his sweep of the jungle there were two things that he noticed. The fact that everyone was panicking like mad and that the ship they had just landed here on was sinking fast. He moved quickly towards the ship and began to grab as much as he could without even bothering what it was or where he was going to put it. All he knew was that he had a job to do, a job he had been ordered to do and there was no way that he was not going to do it.

He walked into the back of the ship slowly, making a sound of disgust at what was left of the equipment inside and began to pick up crates of ammuntion, supplies and his own private stash of explosives. He did not know if he was going to need them but he knew that it was always better safe than sorry and on the world they were on there was no way of knowing what was out there. As he went in for the third time he stopped and looked over at where the fuel cells to the ship sat. He knew by the look of them that they would never be able to get the ship back into the air but they could always be used for something else. With a smile on his face he picked them up slowly and carefully before looking around again and walking out of the ship.

After he placed the cells onto the ground Joshua looked back at the ship and wondered if there was anything else he could do. He knew that he could back into the ship and grab more equipment from it but there was something that was more pressing, something that he could do for now. He then spotted the major standing there looking at the slowly sinking ship.

"Major sir. With your permission I would like to place a few little welcoming mats in the jungle around us. That way nothing can sneak up on us during the night."

Rishka nodded catching the light and turned it on as she flew up into the air and begain leading them by using the light twards the closest cave she had seen earler, and hoped that it was uninhabited. The injured she had treated earler were now moving about with the rest of the scientests and doing there best to help carrie what they could.

She kept her pace as slow as she was able but with the up drafts and pooring rain she had to double back to the group sevral times to keep them on track. Were almost there keep comming... she shouted down to them anoter mile or so and they would reach the cave.

"Join the SMF they said. See the galaxy they said. I should never have listened to they." Cormac muttered loud enough for everyone to hear. "Righ' jolly little céile right here, wouldn't ya say lads?" He asked as he marched through the jungle. "Oi Pot-shot, this much like home? Ne'er been to Trellos meself. I likes me a good and proper forest, not a jungle."

Harper heaved a crate on one of his shoulders while shouting at one of the scientists to keep moving ahead. "Just follow the damn light!" he shouted, pointing with his free hand and weapon towards Rishka's fluttering form up ahead.

At least they were moving out of the flood plain and coming upon firmer land. Rishka's caves were just up ahead.

Harper stopped and stood still, looking back towards the ship as the river waters rose over it. He heard his Staff Sergeant's question, and turned to look Grim in the eyes.

"Roger that," Major Harper told him, "set up a full perimeter defensive grid from this position as contact point all the way to the caves. Maintain radio contact with me or the SarMajor every 15 minutes until you get to the cave."

Harper then looked ahead, towards where his Sgt. Major and the rest of the team were moving the scientists towards the caves. Harper keyed his earpiece comm unit. "Two, Six," he called, using Cormac's SMF team call sign as second-in-command. When Cormac responded, Harper continued, "Grim is setting a defensive perimeter grid for us. He should be finished by the time you arrive at the caves. I want this defensive perimeter supplemented by heavy cannon at the cave entrance and sniper position in a suitable hide near the cave. I will be on the 6 point of your position in about 10 minutes. Six clear."

The jungle underbrush was typical wetland foliage. Every few feet roots jutted out and threatened to take the legs out from under the people. Sometimes a stranded web, obviously spun from an arachnid creature, would cling to a head or arm and cause a brief bit of shock. It was obvious these arachnid creatures spun their webs between trees and branches to catch flying insects, much like the spiders on Earth.

Insects adorned this area of the jungle, buzzing around the SMF team and scientists. The Trellosian, Atal Azal, was completely un-nerved by the smaller, blood sucking insects. As a saurian species, he was cold blooded, and not at all attractive to them. The larger, hand-sized insects buzzed Cormac's head and felt the sting of his hands every now and then as he swatted them. Grunt moved along in silence, his eyes narrowed as he was on the point and was scaning the area while he followed Rishka's light.

The lightning strikes were getting less-frequent now that the group was nearing the caves and the black rock that jutted from the broken foliage.

The mouths of the caves, with their dark cavernous interiors could be see now. They appeared to be dry, and if fires and glow rods were made inside, would be reasonably warm and protected.

Of course, it was logical to assume that other creatures indigenous to this world would already know that the caves offerred protection from the elements...

Seth "Grunt" Salem

Seth craned his neck untill it cracked, looking around the transport ship for whatever supplies they'd need. as far as weaponry goes, he wasn't leaving anything that could be looted by who knows what. Glancing to the side of the cargo room, inspiration hit.

The cargo, or "hold" area of the ship had thick netting along the sides, used to hold objects in place while zero-g, or atmospheric maneuvers happened so people wern't assaulted by crates. Even if it was a peaceful flight, they at least kept a walkway clear. Reaching up Seth grabbed and unclasped the hooks holding the webbing in place.

"Move people! We don't get paid by the hour!" Seth looked up to the voice of his CO.
soldiers, and a handful of civvies. I may not get paid by the hour, but we certainly are being paid to babysit, and babies cry if they don't get fed.
Seth threw open the netting and started tossing small to medium sized crates of rations into it, smirking with the thoughts of watching civilians grimace at the taste of cardboard. When Seth believed there was enough there, at least for a small meal for everyone, he tossed the M920 and a couple boxes of it's ammunition on the top, and closed tight the netting, hooking the clasps together and tying the top shut. with the extra cable left from scrunching the ends together, he looped the cable around his waist, belting himself to a short tether. Not much ammunition in those boxes, Seth hoped they would be comming back for them, but much more and he wouldn't be able to move the sack without too much burden.

At least now he could carry his weapons and not be scowled at for carrying nothing else. We wont be stealthy tonight i guess. but there's more than a dozen civilians with us, we're not going to be stealthy if we're invisible either. Stapping out and dragging the lump behind him he headed to the column of people walking to the woods, catching the head toss from the Major to hurry to the front.

Both hands free to hold his assault rifle, he souldered his way through the line till he reached the front, following the shining light up ahead. bless plated armour, these insects are going to have a little tougher time getting to me than those poor bastards. Sweat dropped down into his eyes and he grimaced, winking away the sting. Then again, their not carrying a couple hundred pounds of metal and boxes. Lunging foreward to allow the tough net to snap free a snall root that had caught on it, Seth looked foreward again, thinking that the cliffs were getting closer, at least the party would not be in the middle of the flood plain. Seth looked up again at that light, quietly admiring whoever, or whatever it was up there for braving the storm to assist.

Rishka couldnt hear the comments on the ground below due to the wind and rain. Tho they werent all that quiet in getting to the caves at least one thing was in there favor and that was that most of the creatures had taken cover, but some could still be a danger, and she still didnt know if there was anything in the caves she was leading them too.

Seeing that they were close enough to the cave now that she could land and guide them in with the light from the entrance she landed and begain moving the light back and forth in there direction so that they could see it and know they were close.

Rishka shook herself much like a bird did to shake the water off of her wings as she waited for them to arrive. Once they made it Rishka went up to the first soldjer she saw, folding her wings down around her as much as she was able for more protection from the elements and the chil in the air. Here is your light, back but i dont know what is in these caves if anything.

"Aye sir" he replied to Harpers orders. "Grunt, get yer fancy beam rifle set up near the mouth of the cave, Pot-shot, give me sniper coverage near the cave if you please! Grim! how you coming with that perimeter? Civvies, stand near the entrance of the cave, i will be along to reconnoiter shortly." he said, trusting that his orders would be obeyed. He moved over to the cave and switched the barrel mounted flashlight on. "On your word boss."

Seth "Grunt" Salem

Seth nodded to the creature who handed him the light, slipping it into one of the pocket compartments his kit had to offer. Untying the line about his waist he dragged the bundle of goods to the side of the mouth. Seth let go of his assault rifle, letting the strap he attatched to it take the weight. While unhooking a lock just within reach at his back, he pulled the beam rifle around, and shouldered the assault rifle across his back. Seth punched in the series of activation triggers on the rifle, with with a faint whine that quickly dissapeared the gun became acrive, and his back a little warmer.

Turning to Cormac Seth gestured towards the civilians. "I figure you guys sweep the inside, get these people in after you, and i set up inside the enterance. anything we don't want comes in here, at least there'd be no room for it to run."

Fumbling at the compartment where he pocketed the light, he palmed the item once more, and tossed it over to Cormac.

Major Harper was coming up behind the team, on their "6" fairly hastily despite the fact he was carrying a crate of 10mm rounds, rations, and some med supplies. He touched his ear comm. "Copy," he said to Cormac, "I'm coming up on your six smartly. Recon the cave at your discrection, SarMajor."

The rain actually slackened a bit, and it was now a steady drizzle instead of the soaking downpour it had been. The air was hot and humid with a thick mist that hung across the black rock, the mouth of the caves, and lower into the jungle.

Now that they were on a bit higher ground, they could see that the jungle itself appeared to be nestled in a valley of sorts, framed by the river on one side and mountainous peaks far off on the other. There appeared to be an active volcano emitting a sooty smoke in one of the peaks. Light from a tiny moon cast shadows across the rainy mist as it settled on the forest below.

Rishka stayed back with the scientest out of the way while the military men did there jobs, she pulled out some of the plants she had found unushual and gave them to the scientests to look at and study giving them something else to focus on rather than how missarable they all were.

If all went well they would be inside the cave soon and perhaps have a fire lit for warmth of which she would keep well back from. Between fire and enclosed places she sometimes wondered which one she hated more. she had learned to deal with each fear for different reasions...

Running her hands over her arms she watched and waited ready to help someone if they were injured or to simply enter the cave to get both dry and warm.

The world was of a binary star system. That much they knew, and it led them to know much more.

Prior to the removal of necessary items from the now sunken transport, it had been Major Harper's orders for a short recon of the area. This had also involved a complete scan of the area for lifesigns and other data. These scans continued into the evening, and they provided much to know about the planetside upon which they were now stranded.

Scans of the planetary rotation, coupled with some elapsed time measurements from their arrival, put the day cycle at 25.7 hrs. The atmosphere scanned as a Class 3, which was habitable. Earth was a Class 3, as was most habitable worlds within the Alliance of Free Systems. This world had a slightly higher CO2 concentration than normal, but nothing to be concerned about.

As for lifesigns, they were in abundance. Visual recon by the team members had provided many different small mammals, reptiles, avian species, and a few that didn't really fit into any category. Unfortunately, all of the discovered species were unknown, and not catalogued within the databases of the team operators handheld scan/comm units. That meant this world was entirely new and uncharted.

One other thing they learned, as the rain clouds began to clear, the stars were all wrong. The team operators and the scientists agreed on one thing about the stars that were visible in the night sky: they were unfamiliar, and all the constellations that could be seen had never been seen before. At least, one scientist pointed out, they had never been seen before from this world.

Now, as they stood ready to enter the cave, the temperature has dropped sharply and the rain has slowed considerably. Off in the distant horizon, appearing to come from the peak of a mountain, a blue-white flash is seen. At first it appears to be lightning, but someone points out that it seems to occur at precise intervals.

Shelter and warmth being their first priority, they prepare to enter the cave for the night.....

"You seem a stout lad, hold this light for me, and shine it where ever me own light aint shinin' " Cormac said, handing the flashlight Grunt had thrown him.
"Goin' in lads" he said into the comlink

He walked into the cave, shining his light this way and that, he walked about 45 feet in, and tossed a flare as far as he could, illuminating far down the passage. He was rewarded by a stream of bat-like creatures flying out of the cave, terrifying the scientists. The one he had handed the light dropped it in his fright.

"Come now lad, t'aint nuttin' frightnin' about t'at." he said
"All seems clear Boss."
