My friend bought me a bar fridge for my basement as a belated birthday gift yesterday. I would like to put it right beside my desk, which is in turn where the tower for the computer is sitting.

Now this could be a stupid question, but I don't know what makes a fridge work or anything like that LOL But are there any magnets or any reasons why I shouldn't stick the fridge that close to the computer?

I know my TV once went a funny colour in the corner because the magnets in something I had close to the TV stand was screwing with the picture.

So will I be putting my computer in jeopardy if I want the fridge right beside the desk here?

there was a time when i sold both computers and refrigerators. go figure.

don't take my answer as the absolute truth, but i'm sure there's no danger there. just be sure both products have enough air circulating around them for cooling. there should be specs in the manuals about how much space they each need.

the more important thing to keep in mind is that a refrigerator often holds liquid items that can pose problems if said liquids opt to venture out of their containers (then there's condensation and such as well).

that's my two-cents... maybe someone can confirm to put your mind at ease.

Confirmation!

A fridge works by freon being moved around the coils. There's a little motor or something (can't remember exactly) that gets it going if need be, but no magnets or anything to worry about.

that'd be yer good ol' compressor thingy that pumps the coolant around... or you could just do like i do and call all those things you can't think of the names for a "flux capacitor."

Thanks to you both.

Now I just need to wait till I get home from work tonight to fire it up.

Unless it is a gas powered motor it WILL have magnets in it, they should not however have a large enough or strong enough magnetic field to get anywhere near your computers delicate bits.

The FCC makes manufacturers add labels if there are high EM (electro magnetic) fields, this is why there are warnings on CAT scan rooms and MRI rooms and around things.

Yeah, that thing! And think, you don't even have to fall and hit your head on the edge of the loo to think the darn thing up. :)

I found it much easier and less painful asking you fine folk here. I'd much rather do that than smash my head off the toilet LOL

It's all plugged in, filled up and even is adorned with magnets...ahhhhh.

The good thing is I was thinking about, if the magnets within the fridge screw the computer.....it's just about time to buy a new one of them anyways, so I'd have a really good excuse.

Maybe I should just put the tower in the fridge when nobody's looking and speed things along a bit.......... :p

Thanks again.

or maybe just ditch the computer and use the cpu cooler to keep your drinks cold?
