Quit today - and it got better.

Advise please?

I know a friend who had that trouble and her condition got worse before it got better! It's highly contagious and she had trouble apply the med without the risk of reinfecting herself again.

Good luck and it should clear in several days.

Sparky,

"Pink eye" is the lay term for conjunctivitis, which "simply" means "inflamation of the eye". Various things can cause it and usually it clears up on its own. There are a few varieties that require medical intervention.

Remember, be careful with self-diagnosis.

Pink eye. Ick. My kids get it ALOT from school.

So, I have become quite the pro at getting rid of it rather quickly. Here's what ya do.

First, you need to clear the gook away from the way every hour or more if it's really bad. To do this, first wash your hands thourouly. Then, take several cotton balls, and get them wet with warm water. Take the cotton ball, and wipe from the inside corner of the eye outward. Do NOT use thye cotton balls for more then 1 swipe. Throw it away. Repeat the process with new cotton balls until the eye looks clear. After that is done, wash your hands again, then apply the medication. Make sure that ANY time your hand comes into contact with your eye that you wash it in nice hot water with soap. It is spreadable, as Blondgirl mentioned, and you can infect other area's, such as your mouth.

If it doesn't start to clear up after a day or two of this, then start using laytex or rubber gloves when doing the eye. Also, you can 'massage' the tear duct to loosen it up a bit. You do this by gently rubbing the area under your eye (where you would gat 'bags') in a circular motion. Don't press hard, just rub it with a bit of pressure for a few moments.

No matter what, don't rub it or it will get worse!

it's possible the "getting worse" part was an allergic reaction to the antibiotic eye drops you got from your pharmacist (i assume they gave you an antibiotic, anyway)

the usual choice is sulfacetamide because it's fairly cheap and quite effective, but lots of folks are allergic to sulfas...another choice might have been neosporin ophthalmic because it contains a mixture of antibiotics with a wide range of activity, but because there's three antibiotics in there, the possibility of allergic reaction is increased

i happen to be allergic to neosporin ophthalmic (though i tolerate the topical ointment just fine)...my eye swelled up something awful and got stuck shut with a crusty white goop...twas a lovely day
