While at the Vet yesterday dealing with a kitty's (damn pussy) kidney disease :( the Vet was discussing a medication available in Europe but not the US. She was trying to remember what the medication was made from so she started mumbling something like "purple, purple something, errr, purple celery, a-a-a-a rhu... 'Rhubarb!' That's It! Yah, Rhubarb"

OMFG!!!
"purple celery"

harrumph.....

Rhubarb is the single very best pie making food in the whole wide world :D:D:D

Right?

Or dare you have a different POV?

Just to be clear I am not talking about some pansy-assed-ol'-strawberry-rhubarb-pretend-pie.

Despite my deep and abiding love for rhubarb (ah, childhood memories of freshly picked and washed rhubarb stalks dipped in sugar...) the absolute #1 best pie matter in the galaxy is, without question, blackberries.

*enjoys more childhood memories but not the one where she accidentally eats a spider whilst picking and eating blackberries*

Sigh.

Also, a friend of mine once told me about grape pie...yes, grape. I had never heard of such a thing but apparently this is a tradition in the finger lakes region on New York. I did get the chance to eat a slice one day and it was, shockingly, quite good.

Agreeing with Keroin 100% especially if you add icecream. I think Feijoa and apple runs a very close second though.

I've never had rhubarb.

Best pie ever, in my opinion, is a toss-up between chocolate meringue and coconut (not with meringue). NOM.

If we're talking about fruit pies, I'll take cherry, please.

no meringue on the coconut? Why prey tell?

I'm not sure. It just tastes odd to me. I grew up eating meringue on chocolate pie, but not on coconut, so it's probably just because it's what I'm used to.

Agreed on the ice cream! Also, feijoa and apple? interesting combo. Next time I'm in your hemisphere I will have to try it!

Shift slightly to rhubarb crumble, and I might agree with you.

Well now, crumble is a whole different ball game...

I've never had rhubarb.

It is not popular, sadly, but it is oooohhhhh so good! Kind of tart but with a bit of sweetener...yum!

Ever had marionberry, that wonderful hybrid blackberry grown in Oregon?

Yeppers. I am a berry lover, have had about all of them. :)

:confused::confused::confused:

What is "Feijoa", please.

It's fruit that is eaten in Kiwisub's part of the globe. I'd never heard of it until I lived in the Cook Islands, where I was introduced to L&P fizzy drink.

ETA: Wait, my bad. L&P is not made with feijoa...I'm all confused today. But it is still good. :)

I discovered, through reading the 'Little House' books (yes, I've read the whole series), that rhubarb was actually called 'pie plant' at that time. :)

Oh, yeah, *real* Key lime pie. Unfortunately, it's hard to find in the upper Midwest. For some reason, Florida just doesn't grow enough Key limes. Damn them.

And real Junior's cheesecake from Brooklyn. ONLY from Brooklyn. For some reason, Junior's from the other boroughs isn't quite the same.

I love rhubarb, but I'm not so big on rhubarb pie. I prefer blackberry cobbler or cherry pie.

Deep dish crumble lattice crust cinnamon dash of nutmeg apple orgasm pie.

With a scoop of apple pie on top.

With seconds, and some for breakfast, because, you know, it's fruit and all.

I can't commit to one type of pie. Blackberry is damn good though, and I like apple in the colder months. I love blueberry crisp with polenta topping.

A more important question - how do you make your pie crust? I do a lard and butter combo. Lard from sustainably raised pigs of course!

Shepherd's pie.

Can't say that I've ever had a fruit pie that was as good as the raw fruit itself.

Thumbs up for humanely raised pig products!

I'm going with cherry.

Cherry is the pie tied to my childhood. We had beautiful tart cherry trees in our yard. Pie always tastes better if you picked the fruit.

I've never had rhubarb though.

Peach! Hot. Vanilla bean ice cream and cinnamon.

Chocolate. Homade from the squares, cinnamon again sets this confection apart from the rest.

All crusts prepared family fashion: apple dumpling recipe.

Gah!

*swoon*
