You mark my words, Emily McCoy's lawyer will use the defense, "My client thought that the Federal Fisheries Minister was Soupy Sales, your Honor!" Comment?

Pie attack on Gail Shea an act of terror: Liberal MP

Burlington, Ont.— An incident in which the federal fisheries minister was hit with a pie by a seal hunt protester should be seen as a terrorist act, says a Liberal MP.

Gerry Byrne made the comment to Newfoundland radio station VOCM after Gail Shea was hit in the face Monday by an American animal-rights activist, unhappy with Canada's seal hunt.

New York City resident Emily McCoy, 37, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is charged with assault.

Byrne told VOCM the government should investigate the incident based on the definition of a terrorist act under the law in Canada.

McCoy was arrested after the incident in Burlington, Ont.

Shea was not injured, and said she has not changed her support for the hunt.

In a statement following the incident, PETA executive vice-president Tracy Reiman said: "A little tofu pie on her face is hardly comparable to the blood on Ms. Shea's hands."

*sigh*

No sooner does any word or idea gain power than every idiot with a grievance wants to claim that THAT'S what this is JUST LIKE!

Pie. Terrorism. It all fits together in an unholy cabal.

Anything PETA does to someone, they should consider it a mark of honor in that it once again demonstrated to the world what a collection of lackwits that 'organization' consists of.

Terrorism??

As a Canuck, I hardly think that pushing a pie into someones face, as an act of civil disobedience and protest, should be considered an act of terrorism. That said, the pie was a tofu pie, so I certainly think that PITA member, Emily McCoy, should be charged with "Assault with a deadly weapon".

Not terrorism, but it's also not a simple assertion of a political objection either. It's a "bad" on two levels. It's an assault on the state that goes beyond the bounds of reasonable protest and it's an inhumane assault on a person when there are so many other ways to express opposition to the government.

Those who do it are self-centered pigs and should spend some time in the pigpen to learn some sense of decency and acceptable social behavior.

They bring themselves below the level of those they are protesting against.

Years ago I was banned from a hunt in central Mass.

A town in central Mass. had an over sized herd of deer in their park. Many of these deer were starving to death so the town decided to have a hunt. Hunters were given their tags by a lottery. I got a ticket and was all set to go hunting.

P.E.T.A. Heard about this and decided to protest the hunt. Their plan was to send people into the park wearing cammo so they would blend in with the undergrowth. Their aim was to get between the huntersa and the deer and in that way stop the deer from being shot. (Their view was that the deer starving to death was natural while being hunted was unnatural.)

I made the comment that I would fill bth my Deer Ticket and my Protestor Ticket. (I figured two deer and four protestors.)

Hey if they got between me and the deer then it was their problem.

For some reason my ticket was pulled and I wasn't allowed to go hunting,

It is not advisable to try pie-throwing at UK politicians, particularly John Prescott. You might get a more vigourous response than you expected.

I saw this and thought it absurd. Yahoo ran an article yesterday regarding a skater getting slammed for wearing fur. The thread that ensued ended up being a gay bashing tirade that ignored the issue. Let me see if I can find the link.

I do not deny their right to protest, but when protest stoops to the level demonstrated in the original article of this thread it's insidous, and does more harm than good. Then the issue moves to other items not of import. PETA kills itself with acting as it does, the message is lost in the rhetoric of stupidity.

May your day and life be peaceful,

Shang, without wanting to disagree really, as an etymology geek I would argue from the other side of the coin. 'Terrorism' is actually a petty and bullying word that's been hijacked because we have no English word to describe indiscriminate acts of murder.

This woman is not Al Queda but if her intention was to try to get the politician to stop supporting the seal by force and not argument: this is an an OED act of terrorism.

Feral kids terrorize communities, drivers are terrorized by overzealous parking wardens, etc.

We need a neologism for the suicidal maniacs: guerillas?

Edited to add: EH, I agree, PETA is trying to terririze fur wearers, not debate with them.

I guess I would get charged with terrorism for bitch slapping the mornic MP?

I'm surprised that no one has commented on the lack of description of the pie used.

Was it squodge? Lemon meringue? Four and Twenty blackbirds? (The beaks would add an element of danger.) Apple? Was there a top crust? Scratch made or store bought?

Add some depth to the story!

Snort, snicker, snort.

I just re-read this thread and saw this. While I'm sure it's a Typo it's too good.

These animal protesters don't seem to get it do they?.
They shoot themselves in the foot every time!

Aye, they do.

The lady has a right to protest, even throw the harmless pie - but damn they look stupid doing it.

It's a mixed bag for me, I understand but abhor it. I can't imagine seal being tasty, but I know the boots are great. The best most can say is c'est la vie, eh? :)

Now if that was a Strawberry Rhubarb pie, it would be an act of terror...of course I hate Strawberry Rhubarb pie, so don't pick me for the jury. ;)

Baby seals...it's what's for dinner. :D

Protesting, okay, but hitting somebody with a pie is assault. I would hardly call it an act of terrorism or anything else but simple assault. Thirty days in jail should be sufficient, but a fine would be pointless.

I am assuming it was a tofu pie in a tinfoil pan or something equally harmless.

Excuse me. That's assault. It's not a right to assault someone else, whether it's a pie or a baby grand piano.

I agree, except that one would be simple assault and the other would be ADW.

Battering someone in the face with a pie in a lightweight aluminum pie pan may seem funny; it's not. If that sort of battering is allowed, the next step is a pie in a heavy pan, then a pie on the end of a basbell bat.

Battery on a person needs to be prosecuted aggressively, in order to prevent such actions in the future.

Soupy Sales should have sued for terrorist assault. He would have gotten billions for the hundreds of pies he got in his face. :D

Yes, it was a typo and yes, it fits. PITA could be "People for the Inhumane Treatment of Animals".

For example, several years ago, they broke into a mink farm and let all of the animals free. Noble sentiment, however they didn't think ahead and figure out what would happen, or maybe they did. Anyway, all the mink were farm born and raised, didn't have a clue how to survive out there and worse, the farm was in a semi-suburban area, surrounded by homes, most of which had pet dogs. The mink didn't know enough to stay away from the dogs. They also didn't know how to find food. As well, the area was home to coyotes, foxes and other predators. People were finding chewed up mink everywhere.

Those animals would have died with a quick blow to the head from a bolt gun. Instead they were "privileged" to die at the hands of nature, "red in tooth and claw".

As for the nature of the pie that was pushed into the Federal Minister's face, PETA/PITA claimed it was tofu. People on hand said it was shaving cream. Neither tofu or shaving cream is a "deadly weapon", but assault is assault and I hope the judge prescribes jail time. After all, PETA/PITA is always looking for martyrs and a few chewed up mink just won't do.

Excuse me. That's assault. It's not a right to assault someone else, whether it's a pie or a baby grand piano.

Did they throw it or go smash it in the person's face? If they threw it, get over it. It's a whip cream-like pie that does nothing. Did they throw the guy who threw an egg at Arnold in jail. No. And that's an egg! It can hurt. I'm not saying it's right, and in fact fine the hell out of her for it, but jail - c'mon. The fucking prisons are full enough. No need to make a martyr of this idiot and give her a platform to rule from. Hit her where it hurts - the pocketbook.

It's assault. And something the thrower wouldn't like to have done to them--so they understand why it's assault (which is why they are doing it)--although they usually are so self-righteous that they assume they have a special right to it.

And as far as Soupy Sales, he was volunteering for it to make money off of it. Let's get real.
