Finally, someone is doing something to save us from the iPhone zombies. A town in New Jersey has made it illegal for pedestrians to walk the city streets and send or read text messages at the same time. It's a start, anyway. I hope it catches on. You can read about it here:

We've had a couple of people wiped out in our town from stepping into traffic while texting. To some extent I consider it Darwinism in action. It's not like they haven't been told how dumb this is.

Is this a city ordinance or just tougher enforcement of an existing law? If it's the latter, I don't see how they can get away with it. Do they issue tickets to people walking on the sidewalk? How about walking through the park or crossing the street in the crosswalk with the light? Even if it actually is a city ordinance, I don't see how they could make it stick if somebody wanted to fight it, which I would.

Personally, I have never texted anybody in my life and don't ever expect to do so.

Of course; you are quite right.
But
When did the public EVER use their common sense?.
I hope this trend continues. I've had folk walking into my car whilst they text.
When I see someone doing it whilst I am on the pavement (sidewalk) I simply stop and let them go round me - if they see me.
