Hang on, MS, it's rumoured to be getting worse. They are discussing overlaying another area code over 416. This would mean you could have the situation where different floors in the same apartment building have different area codes. Think about that!

I wonder why they don't simply split the city along Yonge street and have the west end retain 416 and give a new one to the east end or vice-versa. My guess is because that would make too much sense.

We have three area codes in the Atlanta area. 404 for inside the perimeter, 770 outside the perimeter and 678 for either. We've had ten digit calling for years, it feels weird when I visit my family NOT to dial the area code first.

The way they do the overlay, the area code just becomes another part of the number. I have a friend whose work number is 404, her home number is 770 and her cell phone number is 678.
