I think it's actually pretty bad if you chose to live your life after only ONE single philosophic attitude or rule.

Want me to get a little philosophical myself ? Answer this question:

'If you WANT to fail and succeed in it, what have you done ? Failed or succeeded ?'

You serve your apprenticeship like the rest of us!

PS: Ask again after 100 posts...

ONE single philosophical rule

Hey Snoop dog - can you tell me how you can live your life by multiple philosophical rules without compromisiing your principles?

In answer to your question - you set out to fail (an active or passive process) and you fail. Therefor you have suceeded in your failure. You are thus both a failure (exyernally) and a success (internally). It's all about frames of reference.

Rule 1: Shit happens.
Rule 2: Shit happens frequently.
Rule 3: Get used to rules 1 and 2.

I think conflicts in one's internal moral compass are good for the mind, and sharpen the moral judgement.

(In answer to your plaint about multiple moral guiding principles)

For example:

1A: All you need is love.

2B: All you need is justice.

A person can have a ball balancing off those two admirable signposts to the good life. But whichever way you choose to interpret any situation, you still would be doing the right thing within your human limits.

It's up to us, as humans, to help each other, out of our love for each other, toward justice for each other. The reason for that is that we are all humans, here, together, in an unjust world.

Now you scared me a bit. :D

I have to admit i'm not too much of a philosophical kinda guy so I haven'T given too much thought about things.

But I think at time you NEED to compromise your principles.

I just tried to say that you should rule every situation you're in, every decision you have to make under appropriate morals. Not only one way of seeing things but multiple.

Snoopy, hoping that made any sense.

Just testing (and ignoring the shite about needing 100 posts as an apprenticeship).

All our lives are full of compromise. This is what makes moralphilosophy sooooo difficult. However - there are concepts, common to all societies.

Cantdog - absolutely. Two unreconcilable positions. At the very least we have to use our minds and THINK.

My sig on another BBS (one of my own quotes) :

"I, like water, seek my own level."

I have my own code of ethics. As long as I live within that code of ethics I am pretty content. My ethical code does a lot more to shape my actions thana philosophy of life.

If you find yourself writing long and elaborate definitions of your morals and principles, you have too much time on your hands. Life is too short for labels, and too precious to sing the blues.
  -Liar 2004

I have ethics and a philosophy, but to formulate the gut feeling about rights and wrongs and truths I have would take me as long as the life I have to live by them.

"What is the best moral philosophy to live your life by?"

If this is a serious question and I hope it is, the first step is to understand and comprehend the words one chooses to use.

"Philosophy: (1) The rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge or conduct."

Philo + Soph, Latin, "Love of Wisdom" Philosophy.

A serious study of this field should begin with the only major Philospher of the 20th Century taught in all colleges around the world, Ayn Rand.

Of course, for pleasure and a deeper understanding of the roots of Philosophy, one needs to go back to the Greeks and begin about 400 BCE and follow the evolution.

Again, one needs to define ones terms:

"Moral: (1) Of, or pertaining to, or concerned with, 'right' conduct or the distinction between 'right' and 'wrong'.

"Ethical: (1) Pertaining to or dealing with 'morals' or the principles of morality; pertaining to 'right' or 'wrong' in conduct."

(All definitions from the Random House Dictionary of the English Language, The unabridged edition)

Some other necessary words:

"Real, 1. True, not merely ostensible, nominal or apparent."

"Reality, (1) The state or quality of being real."

"Truth, (1) True or actual state of a matter...(2) Conformity with fact or reality; verity; the 'truth' of a statement..."

"Objective, (5) Free from personal feelings or prejudices; based on facts; unbiased."

"Absolute, (6) Viewed independently; not comparative or relative; ultimate; intrinsic; absolute knowledge."

"Axiom, (1) A self evident 'truth'. (2) A universally accepted principle or rule."

Now..those are the words...a few of them, that one needs to comprehend before proceeding on a search for, "...a moral philosophy to live ones life by."

The next step is for you to acknowledge that a 'proper, right and truthful' moral philosophy exists and than you can comprehend and practice it.

regards...

Thank god I dropped out of music-school.

I took a philosophy course only once. It turned out to be about other people's philosophies. I felt the course content was misleadingly labeled. Philosophology would have been a better term for what they were doing.

So I called them academic wankers and went my way.
