My stories so far are based on my wife's and my real-life experiences. I tweak them (okay, sometimes, more than a "tweak" 
) to enhance readability, but the basic story-line is real. I do the writing, but she contributes observations and emotions I often miss, and she has a great memory for the small details that can add an extra layer of "realism" to the narrative.
We have more fun experiences that I'll write about sometime - but the 2 main stories I'm working on now are completely fictional.
