It's very ritualized. The girl cat approaches from the left side after I go to bed, makes a blurt noise, and noses at my hand. The boy cat approaches from the right side, announces his presence in loud, whiny tones, then goes to the nightstand, circles around a few times, comes back onto the bed and noses at my hand.
