We've all been through that at some point in time.
It's a fact of life (they have short lifespans anyway),

but it's much more devastating for the owner
because the loss of a best friend leaves an empty and lonely hole.

My goat is still alive and happy and ready for a...
But thank you.:rose:

You will find another goat.

However, I did experience horrid feelings after a beloved pet passed a while back.
Just like what a friend of mine is going through right now, and other Litsters probably too.

Pets are angels, the most devoted soulmates and friends I and others will ever have.
We should bond around these losses.

I have two pets that cannot pass quickly enough...

Thanks so much for posting, C.
I had to put down my pet 18 hours ago. He would have died anyway, the injection was an act if mercy.
Ironically, I was feeling the same. When they age, they become self-centered distant and cranky.
I think I will take a break from dogs for now.
Just looking forward to your & Johny's & posts until I get another one.

I agree about putting them down when they are in pain at the end.
It's the kindest thing that you can do.

The only pain associated with my dogs is in my ass...

(And before one of the usual idiots wants to chime in
with something very nasty, they are bitches, so piss off...
)

I'm sorry to head about the loss of your pet, May. It's "just" a dog or cat or whatever, but he was still a companion for years.

I'm sorry about your pet. They live a fraction of our lives and give love unconditionally. Except cats. What a bunch of bastards. 🤨

It's their nature. Dogs are domesticated wolves. Wolves are pack animals -- their natural prey being big things like deer, which take a coordinated pack to bring down -- so they're loyal to the pack leader, and dogs see their humans that way. Cats' wild ancestors, preying on birds and rodents, hunted alone, so they never needed packs and didn't develop the instinct.

It took third heart attack to kill my bitch last year. And that was after she managed to push her leg into the lawn mower. Well, that healed surprisingly well, but perhaps contributed, as it took over half a year until she was back to running after a stick. She literally tore her heart open. And survived that too, for amazement of everyone, and healed it. But she shouldn't be running and jumping after a stick anymore. But it was her greatest joy in life, and so that was how she died, literally.

But the weirdest was long ago. After graduation from high school we had a grand class party. And when I come home in the morning afterwards I found that someone had shat our dog dead. Well, he used to run around a bit too far. Wounded he had managed to get to the gates, but not even tried to go through the hole in the fence he had made to get away, and died there outside the gates. So I buried a dog on a hangover after a high school graduation party.

Champakian, BudSpencer, Rainblow and LupusDei,
thank you so much for your posts.
I didn't envision it when I started this thread, but your acknowledgment or kind words made this day so much easier for me.

Hey I have a dog that's running on 1/5 of a heart, or less.
It's just a matter of time for that one...

I don't know what Little Stupid will do when
she no longer has someone to terrorize.

Terrierize?

I was actually thinking about that a few hours ago, I wanted to post in Wat's thread but then changed my mind.
You too, are in a a spot with your dogs, you mentioned a few times that one of them is going downhill and at this point it's more palliative care.

And carpet cleaning...

I hate doing it, but at regular intervals,
I have to drag her outside by the collar to prevent her from using the carpet.

Also, I've started cutting off her access to food and water in the late afternoon
so that once she's been out for the evening, she can hold out until the morning
which works because I only sleep four to five hours a night, when I can sleep...

yeah, my in-laws looked after their invalid dog for a year
it's both mentally taxing and hard work

oh gosh, in a sense I was so lucky that mine was quick and unexpected
(not entirely unexpected, looking back I now see signs of a tumor - enough to be blissfully unaware this last month, but enough to comfort myself that it was his time & it wasn't my fault)

it's tough to watch them slowly fade away.
But she had her time, didn't she? How old is she?
And the other dog? Will you get him a cat to keep him company?

She's 18, lines form on her face and her paws...

(Apologies to Alice Cooper.)

It's not really that tough, I just wish she would hurry.
To me, she not a beloved pet, a member of the family,
she just a responsibility that I never asked for but was
thrust upon me anyway.

you're not That indifferent. I always enjoyed your Big Stupid and Little Stupid stories in Wat's thread, they also showed tenderness.

gosh, 18 years??? those are A Lot for a dog, particularly a small breed.
She had her time.

I'm not a monster despite what my trolls try to establish.

I tolerate the hounds, I care for them, I make sure they see the vet twice a year.
I do more for them than the average Liberal does for anyone/thing other than themselves...

I don't "virtue signal," but I do shoot straight. A regular Alec Baldwin,
only I know when my verbal guns are loaded...
