Hubby and I had to run some errands tonight so we piled the kids in the car and took off. We had a bit of grocery stuff, some pharmacy, and then I needed specific items for work so hubby took the kids to the pet store to see the critters while I finished shopping.
Once I was done, I joined them, and we looked at the ferrets and kitties and puppies and such. Personally, I hate pet stores. Our pets have always been strays or from the shelter, but the kids love to see all the different animals and it's a nice way for them to be entertained when their parents drag them out on errands.
Anyway, it was feeding time and the store workers were opening the backs of the cages to put the food inside. We weren't paying much attention at that time (the ferrets were entertainingly nippy) when all of a sudden we heard this horrible high-pitched yipping that went on and on.
One of the employees had apparently opened a cage and was cleaning the glass when the little puppy inside (some sort of toy terrier mix) fell or jumped out. About 8 feet down it went, and must have truly injured itself when it hit the floor.
Even after she picked up the dog and soothed it continued to cry. Damn. It was tragic. Heartbreaking. It wouldn't stop crying. Finally the rest of the workers noticed and went over to them. By now our kids were upset, as were other people in the store.
We finally had to leave. We won't know what happened to the little pup but we told our kids it would go to the vet and be well taken care of.
I hope so.
I feel terrible.
