It’s been a rough month. Between breaking up with my girlfriend and the loss of my Great Dane, I’ve been in a funk for too long. I need to get rid of Duke’s crate and bed. Maybe I can get another puppy soon. Maybe one not as big as than me this time. No, I can handle it. I make my way to the office, go through the motions, stop at the bodega for a sub on the way home next to the T stop.
That’s when I see you, in the alley, rooting through boxes looking for something to eat. You look dirty and emaciated, you haven't eaten in a while. I stop and smile and offer you the sandwich I had bought for me 5 minutes before.
You look, hesitantly, your eyes darting around. Feral. I take note, you can’t be more than 20, your gaunt appearance making you look even younger.
“It’s ok, you need this more than me.” As I hold it out you slowly move towards me and the snatch it up. You move away quickly. I hear a small “thanks” and you hide behind a dumpster. I hear you open the paper and I know I’ve done my good deed for the day. I turn and start walking toward my flat.
Two blocks away I feel like I’m being followed. I turn and see you slip into an alley. I turn and keep walking. The rain starts coming down. I hurry to my door just as the downpour begins.
I look back, you are across the street, between two buildings trying to put together a lean to. I put down the groceries on Dukes crate and watch you outside the window. You are starting to shiver. You need to be loved, you need to be cared for, disciplined. A small smile forms. I walk to the door and call you in….
