Pet Peeve: What is the true size of a cup of coffee?

Plans for the future keep us going. This is an important aspect to our lives. I think people who cannot make plans and carry them out are the ones who need help. Spontaneity is wonderful in theory but with everyone's conflicting schedules, I am lucky to see all my kids at once anymore.

Agreed. My globe-trotting daughter shows up for Thanksgiving but that's about it. As far as our own travels go, I've just resigned myself to the fact that the wife loves her lab and if I want to ride off into the sunset, I'll just do it on my own. This year's vacation is an abboration.

Volupt,

You might want to check out the Trinity Tribal Stomp up here on the weekend of July 25,26 and 27. I am going for sure on the 26th to see my personal friends and favorite band, New Riders of the Purple Sage starring David Nelson. It is one of the best kept secrets there is. They moved the location to Junction City this year, which is closer for everyone, camping is the way to go, but I have not seen the layout of the grounds as yet. If you come, we can hang out and enjoy the great organic vegan food. I suggest you bring your own drink, most of these kids do not use alcohol to alter themselves. Everything else you can think of but alcohol.

Won't fit. We'll just be coming home from France and jetlagged half to death. So many things going on . . .

Venti cups, grande cups and last but not least tall cups. Will the Starbuck's names for cup sizes make it into the brassiere world, I wonder? I would like a 36 grande cup bra please. Ha.

Coffee makers

Now there's an interesting change in topics... From Coffee makers to bra size...

Hi lou, great to see your back, I mean you're back.

You're not being picky cos you're wrong. A Brit gallon is defined as 10 pounds of water at 62F. This is 160 avoirdupois ounces and is based on the British gallon of Ale.

When our forbears hightailed it out of Europe, the standard was the Wine gallon which was 128 ounces of water - weight again.

We've kept that so a US pint is 16 ounces and a Brit pint is 20 fl oz. That's why, as well, a US 'Quart' is roughly the same size as a standard bottle of wine or whiskey but a UK Quart is much bigger.

Gets real difficult as the Canadians use the UK measure.

When you hear about us complaining about the price of a gallon of gas, remember we only get 3.7 litres against your 4.5:D

Must be a problem for you buying bras.

Hey Elfy!!

Oh, well that explains it all... haha!

I have no clue at all about your weird US measurements, etc. You just had to go and be different and change everything when you booted us lot out, didn't ya?!

*sigh*

;)

P.S. As for my bras: :p

Well, yeah. Changed the spelling, changed the coinage but hung onto the old style measurements even though you lot switched and then switched again. There's no one so conservative as an old revolutionary, don'tcherknow.

To change the subject, I've got a story working where one of the female protagonists has been divorced for years and now realizes that it was an error. Her ex's name is Alfie. I'm imagining him as either Brit or Aussie. Is there some characteristic term of endearment that is used in Britain but rarely heard on our side of the pond? I want him to suddenly come up behind her at the end of the tale and use it on her. The she straightens up, closes her eyes, leans back into his arms and murmurs, "Alfie . . . oh, Alfie!" Story end.

Thanx,

Alfie?

Having a flashback to the sixties? Sounds like the plot of a movie or the lyrics to a song. :p

My Dutch in-laws are koffie drinkers. Coffee in Holland is a staple, but it comes in one size (for the most part). None of this grande, venti, and larger-than-a-small-country sizes. Their coffee cups are pretty standard throughout the country, and quite a lot smaller than an American coffee mug. I'd say about 1/2 as large.

Interestingly, they have a standard size "scoop" for coffee grounds, too: A koffieschep. One schep per cup of coffee (they like it strong). I imagine it's about an American Tablespoon or slightly more.

Less mystery to the coffee in Holland, but still damn fine coffee. The Senseo machines are a Dutch original; their one-cup size is small to us Americans, but "normal" to the Dutch. So petite, I often ask for two kopjes koffie, alsjeblieft! ;)

All of this is my roundabout way of saying I share the same petpeeve with Allard; can we get some kind of standard sizing? Or is guessing half the fun?!
