New sign (professionally done) at my local convenience store:

"CAR'S LEFT OVER 24 HOUR'S WILL BE TOWED AWAY AT OWNERS EXPENSE"

A Perfecto! Three for three! The hat trick! The Trifecta!

In this day and age, it's wonderful to see that someone will take the time to achieve a work of art. Three esses, three chances for apostrophes, and ... PERFECTION.

Okay, I'm finished. I just had to share this extraordinary achievement with everyone.

Please feel free to use the thread for whatever. I'm done with it.

Afraid not, MG. CAR'S is the possesive form. The correct word should be CARS which is the pural form.

Damn sign painters!

Dear Jenny,
That was my point, dear. The sign painter was WRONG every time.

The left belonging to a car.
The will belonging to an hour.
The expense born by many owners . . .

. . . to pay for a new sign, no doubt!

That's perfectly correct.

A car that have 24 left over wills (of the kind that only works for one hour each, apparently) is being encouraged to have said wills towed away.
It's gonna cost the car an owner though.

So you better watch out.
Use PREMIUM gas.
Plenty of Penn State oil changes.
Turtle Wax twice a month.

Otherwise ...

Well, there's no shame in being a pre-owned car anymore.

Oh those apostrophe's!

Now that you brung it up, MG, I do have to wonder about the name of our favorite forum ...

Shouldn't it be Authors' Hangout?

The way it reads now, it implies that only one of us is allowed in at a time ...

Re: Oh those apostrophe's!

Zack, didn't you know? It's my hangout. The rest of you are just guests.

Oh wait. I'm not an author yet. Sorry.

worth a shot,

Doh! Those apostrophes.

Dear Z,
I've often wondered about that, myself. I will probably continue to do so.

Each one of us is supposed to think it's my hangout.

Isn't it each author's hangout? We just happen to be here together.

Gauche

Edited to add: I suppose technically we can only be here one at a time. It's a time share hangout.

Oops, nevermind. I thought Gauche said we just happen to come together. Stilll, whether coming or posting, it's the impatient people who get double, triple, quadruple, etc. posts.

patient author,

Perdita

How about those signs inside the store that advertise the "12 Items or Less" isle?

That kind of thing makes me cringe. I think you're right MG, that one would be hard to beat for sheer perfection.

It annoys me even more when my childrens' teachers do it, on letters they send home to parents. Grrrr. I just have to point it out to them.

Not sure that I get this V.

Can't see anything wrong inside the quotes, but the 'isle' makes it amusing.

MG, This is by far my biggest pet peeve in terms of poor grammar. And it is becoming rampant... I am worried that it is becoming so common that people will forget that an apostrophe does NOT indicate the plural form! (Ok, maybe I need to find more important things to worry about but I do worry about it a little)...

These things get me riled, too, and once I got in trouble. I was given some flyers to hand out and they were full of grammatical mistakes. I marked one up in red ink and sent it with a note back to the customer's rep that had handed left them for me. I was running a gas station at the time. Told him I knew he had a low opinion of all us 'grease monkeys' but since HE did go to college, I thought the least he could do was proof his work.

Did not make many friends on THAT one

Dear Gauchie,
Not to worry. There are fewer of those signs around lately.

Ps. OnD, One is seldom showered with gratitude when pointing out someone's dumbdom.
