Perfect Movies

I was thinking about that movie about ten years ago (?)called "Silverado." (Danny Glover, Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner) To this day I can't think of anything that I didn't like about it. That can't be said about most of the movies I see these days. Rarely do I see a movie that DOES IT for me on all levels.

Perhaps I'm just being too critical, or perhaps Hollywood is getting lazy. (Probably a bit of both.) Anyway, I was just curious about what movies you thought were "perfect." Here are a few more of my favorites:

The Sound of Music
Star Wars
Sense and Sensibility (Well, okay, I could have done without Pugh Grant.)
Guys and Dolls
Beauty and the Beast
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Alien and Aliens
Pretty Woman
The Parent Trap (the new one with Lindsay Lohan)

My taste leans toward the romantic and those with happy endings, obviously.

I'm sure there are more, but that's a start. I'm sure some of you will name some, and I'll go, "Oh, yeah! I forgot about that one!"

What are the movies you consider "perfect?"

Rushmore.

PS: I love the remake of The Parent Trap. I own the video, and have watched it over twenty time. It scares me a little to admit that.

Duh! Princess Bride! LOVE it. And Hello, Dolly! is one of my all time favorites. I can sing all the songs. Scary, huh.

Nitelight, I'd never have thought you a Parent Trap addict. My kids like to watch it, and I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Adored the Mummy also. THey're making a Mummy 2! I can't wait. Same cast. WHoo hoo. They better not blow it and make a stinker.

A few that I consider perfect

The Godfather, Part II
Citizen Kane
Strangers on a Train
Duck Soup (although I never think a Marx Brothers movie is long enough, so does that make it imperfect?)
Friendly Persuasion
Shane
Rear Window
Blood Simple
On The Waterfront
Double Indemnity
Kiss Me Deadly
Detour
Comfort and Joy

Just a few:
"LadyHawk"
"Murphy's Romance"

Considering I have a large collection of films, I found this question hard to answer. They're all good movies, but to say any one of them was perfect is difficult. However, if I had to pick one, it would have to be "The Shawshank Redemption" mainly because it grabs hold of you from the very beginning, and never lets go.

A visual feast...

I just saw the most splendid film. I don't know how long ago it would have been released in the States and Europe. It's called "Himalaya". Made by the French. Filmed in Nepal. Subtitled. Superb cinematography. Simple but true moral tale told well. It makes all the holiday fare like "What Women Want" look like High School amateur productions.

I don't think I've ever seen one that could not be improved, but I suppose I'm too close to the works and see and hear too many details.
For instance, I saw 'Cast Away' a couple of weeks away, and it was a good film , but in places, the stereo was wider than the screen, and the sound of the surf on the reef was closer than the image.
Picky picky picky, hey- but just not perfect!
It does not spoil my enjoyment, but I notice it.

Mask
Moonstruck
You've Got Mail
Sleepless In Seattle
The Quiet Man
Hatari
Hunt For Red October
Airforce One
On The Beach
Odette
The Great Race
Gallipoli

Perfect comedies: Top Secret! and Airplane! I've seen each one about a dozen times and they never fail to make me laugh.

Perfect horror: The Haunting (the original one). It always gives me the shakes, and I've seen it at least 6 times.

Perfect drama: Taxi Driver. Always disturbing.

Perfect Western: The Searchers. Great story, great characters. John Wayne and John Ford at their best.

Perfect "bad movie": The Devil's Rain. Ernest Borgnine is the devil, complete with goat horns! William Shatner chews the scenery as only he can. Cracks me up every time.

I can't believe no one has mentioned...

"Casablanca"...Bogey at his finest. At the end of that movie when he forces the woman he loves, the only woman he has ever loved and quite possibly the only woman he ever WILL love to get on that damn airplane for the good of "The Cause"...now THAT is a Man...very Dickensian (think "A Tale of Two Cities" here)

And since it just recently passed by here in the States...how about...

"Groundhog Day"? One of Mr. Murray's best performances in recent years..."I'm not saying I'm THE God, I'm just saying that I'm A god...I am immortal..."

Havoc

ps- Was it just me, or did anyone else notice that the poorly received "Barbwire" starring Pamela Anderson a few years ago was a more modern telling of the Casablanca tale? I know it's performances are hard to stomach, but watch it again and think about the story of Casablanca as you do this time...

A Nightclub owner in an "Independant Free City" that has a former lover show up out of the blue escorting the only hope for the resistance, and said Nightclub owner comes into possession of the only means to make good an escape from nefarious Facist forces...Just a random thought there but I was struck by the similarities in the plot all the way through...right down to the "Fatman" who has in his possession the (Casablanca)Letters of transit/(Barbwire)Counterfeit Retinal Contact Lenses...

I've seen too many movies maybe...LOL

I did forget to include my selections for "Movies that are so bad they are good" category.

"Attack of The Killer Tomato's"
"Big Trouble in Little China"

And two very good biker movies
"EasyRider"
"TimeRider"
